The real question here is why a kid with dreads (who hasn't been harmed in any real way...please don't direct any arguments to that my way!) is an actual news story.

Heavens. ❄❄❄

It's 2020....why is hair even an issue in a public school?

It is easy for a kid to stay away from admin and most teachers are just glad a kid is in class and are not the nazi's saw it at several school in Humble ISD. Rules are rules you signed a contract and you must follow it. Quit making it racial. Fight the right way not more than half way through the school year!

@carol888 : That's at least 3 if not more years growth. The only people making it racial are the teacher/s that picked him out. Someone said they changed the dress coed mid year. He literally can fight it on religious grounds, as there is already precedent.

Dreadlocks are beautiful, I think this story sucks.

@Littlegoo : Not always, my son's friend's stink, as in smell bad. I know the whole dread thing starts because they don't wash it, but it does get sour at some point. Some kids don't know how to care for them.

My stepson got sent home a while back because his hair was too long, we had to cut it cause it was school rules. Was like that when I went too, we didn't get any special favors, I don't see why anyone else would?

He was probably told a bunch of times and his parents probably got letters and calls that were all ignored. Rules are rules. Why do people think they don't have to follow them.... It was in the handbook that they signed at the beginning of the year....Their problem not the schools. Accept responsibility. If you have a problem get on the school board and change it or go to the school and fight. I did on several things for the betterment of my kids schools.

@carol888 : That's so funny, that's what I've been saying about DJT the whole time. Maybe they're following his path. JS I have actually been there with parents like that though, so I know what you mean.

I just know if it was my student and I only had 3-4 more months with him, I'd find a way to work it out.

I remember a kid in my daughters class that had long hair and other problems but he was in the top 10. The principals had told him. letters were written, teachers hid him. He skipped a lot and I think the teachers counted him present anyway....... He is now in prison.

My son has had to cut his a few times to comply with school rules. He would grow it out and wait until the school said to cut it. Shorten it some and repeat.

I don't see this as a race issue though.

I feel bad for him but rules are there for a reason and he needs to comply and move on or go to another school.

I have never understood the reason why boys can't have long hair or wear earrings. If girls can, why can't they? There's not a safety issue or some important reason. Girls used to not be able to wear shorts or pants but they do now.
And cutting dreads isn't like just cutting hair. They take a long time to grow out so this isn't something that just popped up, even at the beginning of the year. He'd been growing them since 7th grade. If he was allowed to wear them as long as they were kept up for 3 years why is it all if a sudden a problem when his graduation is at stake? Yes I believe in rules but rules that don't make sense deserve to be looked at.
