I think what some are failing to realize is that a lot of our government's unfortunate failure to put a stop to this is that around the world the United States has an image to upkeep. Sure we can go to the border guns loaded and dare anyone to cross but we have managed to project a bon homie image of acceptance freedom a "melting pot"....yes I realize it seems trivial but image means a lot and there has to be a way to control this situation without destroying that perfect image.

@nikkiole:

We don't have a "perfect" image. America and it's people are pretty much despised the world over. Most of the countries that are happy to let us have their overflow despise us as well. At least that has been my experience traveling the world over the past 35 years with few exceptions. People love that I'm from Texas but hate the USA generally speaking. Very, very few places have I traveled that people had good things to say about the USA.

There are so many ways to stop services except to legal citizens and we just won't do it. Go try that anywhere else in the world though and see how far you get.

So then think about it...why would these parents do so? You really think alllll these parents don't give a crap about their kids? Only American parents care about their kids?

@HumbleGirl:

HG,

I don't believe ur statement to be true. I find it to be extreme.

Praise God I don't face these trials but I do stand firm on my belief.

My children would not go ahead of me I would be the one to pave the way. I would take that path first!

I don't believe it's a matter of who loves who more I believe it's a matter of choice in how things are done.

Been 25 years since I traveled abroad quite a bit - always like the perspective from people who do. I found it hit and miss- mostly due to American "Arrogance" - but for the most part - these days when I travel - I find indifference. Always interesting to travel abroad and view the news from a foreign perspective.

In my travels abroad, I did not find this feeling of being despised at all. Great majority I found to be very friendly.

I am not saying people were not friendly or welcoming in most places. I am saying the image of America as this wonderful place that everyone desires to head to is not accurate based on my experience in traveling extensively. It was a great surprise to me as a younger person to find that others had such a negative view of my home country. I thought everybody loved us since we had gone about helping so many around the world. It is no longer a surprise.

The politicians are basically uneffected by this horrific immigration problem. They live in gated communities and their kids go to private schools, they can afford medical care, etc. I have the greatest idea ever. I believe the White House sits on about 18 acres of land. Let's ship some of these uneducated, diseased and in some cases parentless ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS to the the lawn of the White House and see how long Mighty Michelle will tolerate it. Do you think for one minute she wants them in her neighborhood and playing with her children. Hell No! Maybe it has to be in his and her face for them to see it is a problem.

I just can't see MOST parents putting their child in this predicament, sending them off into the unknown, traveling many many miles through super dangerous Mexico from Central America...just for their own selfish purposes? I would sacrifice my life for my kids in a heartbeat and there is no scenario where I would voluntarily place them in harm's way.

I believe no matter what ethnicity, parents all over the world feel the same.

There is more to this.

@HumbleGirl:

Let's look at some stats for Honduras:
a. Third highest teen pregnancy rate in the world
b. 59% of population live in poverty - 36% in extreme poverty
c. 60% of children on reach the sixth grade education
d. 38% of population are teenagers.
e. highest murder rate in the world

Yes, I can easily see young people leaving and risking extreme danger. I wonder how many don't make it to the border. looking at where they came from, it would not take much to be in a better place.

What about Ted Cruz's father? He fought FOR Fidel Castro and then came here illegally(bribing an official):
“A friend of the family -- a lawyer friend of my father basically bribed a Batista official to stamp my passport with an exit permit,” the elder Cruz said.

Then he married a US citizen(a popular method), had a business venture in Canada where Ted was born...Moved back here in 1974 when said venture went south, eventually divorced his US citizen wife...And didn't bother to become a "naturalized" US citizen until 2005(ironically when his son's political aspirations were starting to bloom and that "skeleton in the closet" could have hurt Ted politically)...

>> I want to thank all of you for being able to have a rational discussion on this. As you now I am a frequent advocate for President Obama, but on this particular issue I disagree with him. Based upon the research I did I believe many of you get it and didn't let your dislike for the President (for some) prevent you from not seeing the forest for the trees as it did on another message board.

In order to have effective change with the immigration system the laws must be changed by Congress to cut off the avenues of a drawn out appeals process. Also birth right citizenship needs to be revoked if at least one parent is not an American citizen. Finally, in my opinion a person that violated the intent of their visa should not be granted citizenship simply because they married an American. If it's true love then the American should be more than happy to accompany his/her spouse to their home country to set up residence.

I know this will sound harsh to some of you. But that's just the way I see it.

@rocket:

Certainly these changes would be more effective and cost much less than building a damn fence or lining up troops on the border!

@Undecided:

You can not build a fence high enough or anything below ground, they will keep getting in .Not even the threat of death stops them, which that in it's self explains just how desperate these folks are for work & money .I don't look at most of these people as the problem, I look at their government & the drug lords as the problem .Yes of course drug dealers & gangs & most likely terrorist come across which is awful . I do agree with rocket for the ones that are here but we have to stop them from coming.

I used to work a lot in central America and was always surprised at the size of families. Over the years I asked several people why they had such large families. I was always surprised at the answer.

It was not we don't believe in birth control or because of our religion but if I have lots of children my chance of having a successful one is increased.

Their belief is that if one succeeded the whole family would succeeded because that successful one would look after everyone else.

What we are seeing in this immigration problem is just what their family plan was and that is the successful one is bringing everyone else to life in this country. Until these countries take responsibility for their population issues these problems of immigration will continue to reoccur.

>> What a waste. They will turn out to be Lawn boys and convicts competing for low end jobs American's used to do.

Deport them now before they find out how great our welfare system is.

Sorry all of you bleeding hearts out there but most of these kids are already too old to be educated properly even if education was important in their society.

@timbom:

At least for now most are cleaning houses, mowing lawns, and working in certain industries and will be as long as we are addicted to cheap labor.

@Undecided:
I agree undecided , but it is the cheap labor of the Mexican people that came here that built Houston . I think most of us would not be living in the homes we live in had it not been for the Mexican people that worked for almost nothing !Back early 1980's you could go to the front of Kingwood on Northpark at a Stop & Go & for $10.00 a day & you provide their lunch & drive them to your home they would work for you . Every custom builder in our area I was told went there. I walked many homes back then under construction & I will put my hand on the Bible I saw very young Mexican children floating sheet rock down low that they could reach & the men did everything above their heads . And their is the reason if I can hire a Mexican person for any type home improvement I will always hire him before others . Their work is (far better) than others . And reason being it's like one of my workers told me , all 9 children, girls included worked construction with their parents . He said even his sisters could build a house from start to finish & do all jobs it takes to build it .Other area's of the country pay 10 times the money we have for housing .Now why is that ???
