If you haven't tried Lake Houston Wilderness Park you have to do,it. Over 5000 acres nestled between Peach Creek and the East fork of the San Jacinto. Formerly the Champion Rod and Gun Club the area was a retreat for Champion Paper Executives. Sold to TPWD in the early 80's. Years later the Peach Creek Girl,Scout Camp property was added to the park. Budget constraints prevented TPW from ever developing it fully. Management of the property was transferred to the Ciry of Houston and ironically the parks dept. applied for and received a grant from TPW to begin development. The park has great hike and bike trails. Don't let the warning signs keep, you from visiting. They are more or less informational . They went up years ago when a visitor stepped on a snake in another park and complained that there weren't signs telling visitors that there were snakes in the park. I have spent many a night sleeping in a tent ther as well,as 1000's of scouts. With Fall coming, it's time to get outdoors.

Yeah. Used to live out there. Plenty of venomous snakes.

My parents still live about a mile or two from there.

Unless that is an old map, doesn't look like they've done much since I last visited a couple of years.

The DW and I are interested in the A-Frames, but they hadn't got water out to that area yet. Been meaning to get back out there and look around just hadn't had the time.

Looks like a cool place to camp, reasonably priced for a day trip and alittle bit closer than Coldspring!

Thanks for the reminder!

Oh and also, you don't HAVE to take 59 to get there. 1960 to northbound 2100 in Huffman will to!

@tflea Yes they do! We like them - especially sitting out on the screened in porch at night in the rockers. It's fun.

The stream is pretty to look at though. Lots of rocks and treasures to be found by kids. Emoticon

We love this park. I feel kind of silly paying to go there though because it's basically the same as our back acre. But the kids like to wade in peach creek. The water is clear, we don't swim near where there is a lot of brush or overhang. It's more for wading and making boats and letting the dog cool off than a swimming place.

We finally pulled the trigger and stayed the weekend.

It is very nice and peaceful but a tad expensive. The AFrame is essentially a screened in shelter, now with lights, power, trash can and water in your site.

You can get the cheaper screened in shelters, but you better really like your neighbors as the idiot who designed them, put them too close together! Don't snore or fart at night or everyone will hear you! And don't even THINK about having any love opportunities!

The A-frames are secluded and newly built restrooms with private showers are a short walk away now.

If is predicted to rain bring some tarps and zip ties as the rain can blow in on two sides (thankfully we were prepared!).

Anyway, time to go plug my phone in and watch the woodpeckers and squirrels!

If anyone wants updates on this place, let me know!
