I went to Wal-Mart and Kroger this morning. Dang, if someone did not get in the "Express Lane" with a loaded grocery cart. In neither case, were they turned away. In fact, Wal-Mart told me they will never turn someone away in the "Express Lane" with a loaded cart with way over 20 items.

@AMCLady:

That sucks...I wonder what the hell the point of the 'Express Lane' is then?

Stores need to put people in their place if they aren't following the rules and making other shoppers have a miserable experience at their establishment.

They may **** that person off, but they would make the three people behind them very happy.

@AtascaGuy:

The store employee may be told not to turn people away, or say anything, but if I am in a bad mood, I sure will say something, and give the stink eye. Now if it's an old person, I'll probably let it slide. I love old people.

Retail is a tough job to work in for sure. Damned if you do, damned if you don't....somebody is always going to get mad over something. I have done both retail and restaurant work years ago, and it was some of the hardest work I've ever had to do. Unless an employee is flat out, over the top rude to me, I am always nice. One rude person can really ruin somebody's day. It doesn't take much effort to be nice to people.

I agree...what is wrong with (some) people these days?!

Generally, the only grocery stores I shop at are HEB and Trader Joes, and Target (which isn't really a "grocery" store). The employees at HEB and TJ's are always nothing but fantastic. Target is definitely hit or miss. For some reason, I always get stuck with the guy that reminds me of Shaggy from Scooby Doo. I would hope that he only looks like he's stoned most of the time. He's nice, but overly friendly to the point of creeping me out.

Oh, and 30 items in a 15 item line isn't that bad......I agree, when it's a huge basket full of crap, that's a different story. I'm usually the type of person that will let the person behind me with 4 items go in front of me because they will be done and out of the store before I am able to get my 100 plus items on the belt. There is no reason to make them wait.

I have just decided that on Sunday mornings, I am going to get up early, and go to HEB by myself with our weekly list and get the shopping done and over with. I went at 8am yesterday morning, and it was so un-crowded and wonderful. I was able to take my sweet time without my husband getting annoyed with me, or my kids trying to make me buy stupid crap. There were fewer lines open at that time of morning, but the fact that the aisles weren't all backed up made it totally worth it.

@nikkiole

I've worked mgmt in retail and hospitality my entire working life. It takes a lot of backbone to do what you do. Just hold your head high and know that at the end of the day you get to go home and be happy and all the customers that give you grief will still be an ****** when they get home. Take comfort in knowing that once you're done with school you hopefully can get out of retail. Although I love it, I don't wish that industry upon my worst enemy!

I will go so far as to say something to a fellow customer being rude to a worker. Or claiming they did something they did not to a manager.

I think it's just easy to tell who has done the job before and thus is understanding and compassionate...and those that are just *****s.

I also do call in or email in compliments for great service. Keep doing what you are doing Nik! You will never be one of the ****** bunch.

I love HEB, but I cannot stand how crowded the store and the parking lot are. I get on the verge of a panic attack in there sometimes. It's as bad as Walmart with the people blocking aisles, and poking and just randomly stopping without at least moving over first.

I went at about 10am last Sunday and you would have thought it was the day before Thanksgiving.

Another thing I noticed, is that most of the employees I came in contact with look depressed and **** off....checkers and sackers....

I cannot stand having someone with more than the item count posted going into the express line. I am the customer who will say something to that person, usually - "Excuse me, perhaps you missed the sign that this is an express lane for fewer than xx items?"

If the person says (rarely) "Sorry, I didn't see the sign - please go ahead", then all is well. MOST of the time they say something like they are in a "hurry", "don't feel like waiting" etc..

Then I break into baseball style chatter about how inconsiderate they are, selfish, egotistical...etc...etc..in my own little attempt to shame them or at least maybe have them think a bit harder before they pull it the next time.

I think the cashiers SHOULD redirect shoppers to the appropriate line. Most all of us would better appreciate that approach instead of just forcing those of us who follow the "rules" to be punished cause the store doesn't want to step up and do the right thing.

Target is the worst store in our area for check-out. Why they wasted money on 30 check-out lines when they typically only have 2 or 3 even open is beyond me. Target has lost it's luster for me.

I have been noticing that lately in HEB and Walmart. I remember not too long ago the HEB was nice but the recent crew seems different. Walmart is just walmart.
