I wonder if it'll ever happen again, you know, the political "switch" where the South are Democrats and the North are Republicans.

@nikkiole:

It's possible. I voted for Barry Goldwater! I've been forgiven.

Some of those who voted for JFK were so angry with him that they were (not too sad) when he was killed - because they thought LBJ would slow down the civil rights movement but he either couldn't or wouldn't. Then they became republicans.

@Undecided:

That would not lead them to turncoat to the Civil Rights friendly Republican party... that generation of which you speak is long gone. There was nothing that would lead a good ol' boy Southern Democrat to want to cozy up with a Rockefeller Republican....

It's not much of a "switch" really, nowadays. And let's hope not, otherwise there will be a great shortage of U-Hauls for the mass exodus North....

At the time, LBJ was considered a turncoat by good southern dems who became repubs because he did not STOP/HINDER the damn CR movement. I was employed by good southern dem politicians at the time so I know.

Governors don't matter - the south stayed dem on a local and state level for years after they voted repub for pres.

In the words of Tip O'Neil -- "All politics is local." I would argue the governor is more important than the president. But perhaps on another thread.

You may be right but the good southern dem voters did not see it that way - they were not able to go cold turkey/

@tflea:

Why are you quoting me....you should quote rocket.

@Fairlane67:

oops you are right , but I also thought you should see just maybe most are ok with a History lesson . I don't want Rocket discouraged because he is by far my favorite person to read on A.com . I believe the things he writes are of value & worth taking the time to read .Sorry if I offended you .

apology accepted. BTW, I don't think rocket is discouraged by anything I have to say. I will say again....this board should be for fun, even if it is a history lesson. Condescending comments against some, to begin those lessons, or insults hidden behind niceties, are BS, and that is what I will generally call out.
