Some of you modern day puritans will be shocked to know that presidents and illicit sexual liaisons have a long history going back to the earliest days of the Republic. Thomas Jefferson for example had a years long affair with Sally Hemings, an African-American woman and had children with her. While running for president, Grover Cleveland was outed as having had an illegitimate baby with Maria Halpin. Cleveland ultimately fessed up and admitted he indeed fathered the child.

President Warren Harding was known to have sexual tryst with Nan Britton in various rooms of the White House. Later Britton would claim that he fathered her daughter. While running for president, it was widely known that Harding was also having an affair with a woman named Carrie Phillips. Reportedly the GOP was so concerned they gave her hush money to quietly go away.

Franklin Roosevelt carried on a years long affair with his mistress Lucy Mercer. In fact when Roosevelt died in 1945, he was with Mercer at the time. Dwight Eisenhower had a years long affair with his mistress Kay Summersby his wartime driver and later secretary while he was a general, and married to Maime.

Mind you the above are just some of the affairs that are widely known historically. Most likely within the walls of the White House there are many other shocking tells of sexual intrigue the public will probably never know. Because those entrusted with being in the presidents living space from Secret Service to administrative staff will never tell it.

I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute—where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote—where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference—and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.

I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish—where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source—where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials—and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all.

What if....Jack Ruby was to have delivered escorts to Kennedy on the night of 11-22-63....In which he was to have been paid very well...Oswald then blew his payday (no pun intended)....and then was so p*ssed that he shot him....it could've happened.

BusyMommy, as a young adult at the time he was killed, it's a special time in history for me - just as you, I and every one else alive in our country will never forget 9/11/2001, I will never forget the day President Kennedy was shot and killed. It was a very scary time. There was much talk of a conspiracy. Several cabinet members were on an overseas flight at the time. We did not have the communication abilities we have now so we did not get instant updates - and much of what we heard was incorrect.

To me, this would be like someone saying in 2051 that they do not understand what all the fuss is about.

So it's not just about President Kennedy, it's about an event in history that left us all shaken. But, yes, Kennedy was special to many people for many reasons.

The Kennedys were glamorous, smart, funny, witty, and CATHOLIC - which was very special for people of the Catholic religion - our only Catholic president so far.

President Kennedy got the ball rolling on civil rights - I know black people who framed pictures of President Kennedy they cut from magazines and hung in their homes, because in many parts of the South he was their hope for freedom to work in well paying jobs, to go to colleges of their choice, to vote, to eat in restaurants and to sit in movie theatres that did not have balconies, to drink at public water fountains, for God's sake. You would have had to have been there to appreciate it and maybe you would not have then but I do.

Hope this helps.

So he stands out in most people's mind as an unfaithful husband. I don't see the appeal.
