Okay, I just did. It doesn't seem like he was a practicing Catholic- or at least not even close to a good Catholic.

I guess I just view the President as the figurehead for a political party/ special interest groups. He likely made political moves not out of the goodness of his heart, but for his own benefit. Maybe it was different back then (I have only lived long enough to really understand 3 Presidents). It is sad whenever someone is murdered and he certainly did not deserve any of that.

I do understand what you mean about a historical moment, but IMO his death didn't have as much impact on the average American as Pearl Harbor or 911. Or did it?

@BusyMommy:

I cannot tell you how often President Kennedy attended mass or how Good a Catholic he was. The important thing to the Catholic people I knew was that he was Catholic period. It was pretty much presumed up until then that a Catholic could not be elected to the presidency. You must realize that the general public did not know about his sex addiction at the time. Everyone, including the press, covered for him.

His boldness in speaking out for civil rights for black citizens is what makes him super special to most people. He was the first president to do so. Again, I cannot expect you to understand what it was like for black people in the old plantation areas of the south where blacks outnumbered whites and whites did whatever was necessary to retain power - there were counties in the old river plantation areas where NO black people were registered to vote - and they outnumbered whites!

But don't you think the civil rights movement would have happened no matter who the President was? The people elected him, so the people must have believed in the movement, right? It wasn't like he went against the people.

The Civil Rights Movement was ushered in DESPITE the Democratic party, not BY the Democratic party. Let's not revise history.... Unfortunately, we will never know how JFK would have acted during the tumultuous mid-1960s. But the myth of the man continues, and we can make of him what we wish!

Yes, the civil rights movement would have happened eventually but President Kennedy is the first president to REALLY get behind it and is, rightfully, due credit for that. I think many were caught off guard by his boldness in pushing civil rights and he had sort of faked them out when he picked LBJ for his running mate. LBJ had been a staunch segregationist (that turncoat!).

I do not revere the man any more than I think President Obama is my savior, or god.

I like the idea of remembering him especially for the civil rights progress made while he was in office.

And I like remembering the event as an important date in the life of our country.

Also, his speeches were inspiring to the young people of the day.

"This is why JFK probably had Johnson be his VP...Johnson probably helped get JFK the Southern votes he wouldn't have had without him."

The Dems had the south locked in the 60s.

Texans in the '60s would not have voted for a dirty, carpet-bagger Republican under any circumstances... In fact, the first Republican to win Texas was Reagan. Texas has had only three Republican governors since reconstructions -- White, Bush, and Goodhair.... Texas is deeply ingrained in the Democratic culture -- just wait until 2016 and see.

Some of those who voted for JFK were so angry with him that they were (not too sad) when he was killed - because they thought LBJ would slow down the civil rights movement but he either couldn't or wouldn't. Then they became republicans.
