You are so wrong in so many ways. There are 0 shelters in this area. The closest ones are downtown Houston and Conroe. Resources??? Very little and again they are downtown. The shelters are at capacity and with waiting lists AND in contrast to what most people believe SSI and SSDI programs are extremely hard to get into. The denial rate for first time applicants is about 95%, 2cd time applicants get denied85% -3rd timers about70%. HUD vouchers are not being issued here in TX at this time- section 8/11 ( HUD for for special needs) has about a 4 year wait because there are so few apartments for special needs adults. Many other resources require acceptance into SSI and SSDI programs.
How do I know this?? Because I have a special needs adult son. Long story short. He applied for SSI and SSDI back in Aug 2013- he JUST got accepted in June of this year- almost 3 years. He had to hire a lawyer who specializes in SSDI for special needs inorder to finally receive benefits.
He lost his HUD 8/11. Housing in May due to a mental breakdown and property was destroyed. He was homeless for a short period of time when we found him and put him in a hotel until we could find housing. We searched for 2 months for housing- it's a catch 22- most resources ( beyond shelter) require acceptance into a government program like SSI and SSDI. There were no openings in any shelter within a 100 miles of here because of the flooding back in May.
There are no mental institutions-except for the criminally insane.so private group homes are available but very costly anywhere from 2,000- 7,000 a MONTH and insurance doesn't pay. Living with family isn't always possible ( as in our case).
We went through most of our savings helping him and we are still having to pay for part of his rent until the benefits start. We won't be able to retire and after we die-well I don't want to think about that.
Not here to criticize just to educate- I don't know who these homeless folks are but I can tell you that many homeless folks arare exactly like my son and many of them don't choose to live this way and would love to work and have normal lives. I know there are homeless that are addicts and do choose this life also but I just wanted to give you a different perspective of a homeless person- my adult son.
