Is there an organization that can help them? I mean, I understand the concern y'all have, but bottom line is these people need help.

If the authorities are involved, would they get the help they need? Or is it just "catch and release" and off they go and be someone else's problem?

@ljaranda
Has anyone gone in there to see if there are children that need help?

There are usually guys asking for money by little Caesars. Also a guy who plays guitar with the case open on the sidewalk. Might be someone from the tents

This is why I support homeless shelters and outreach programs in lieu of handing out money in parking lots and street corners

If you feed stray cats, do you expect them to go away? I've seen people on here falling all over each other to provide handouts to the panhandlers, (which is very nice), but you really can't do that and not expect this outcome.

Or maybe, they are just waiting for the 1960 construction so they can claim their place under the overpasses.

I know someone is bound to get feelings hurt over the stray cat analogy, I think it is one most people can relate to though.

It's probably Kenny! And, maybe the couple with all of the ADC drama from the library.

I look at it this way, if my family were to suddenly become homeless, my first thought would not be to go into the woods and live in a tent. I would seek immediate help for shelter from family and friends. If that didn't work, then I would contact a church or shelter. I would change my current circumstances ASAP, even if that meant working several menial, laborious jobs below my qualifications that completely sucked.

IMO people who live this way choose to do so. If there are children, then the authorities will take care of them until their parents can. Enabling the parents by taking supplies to them will only support their lifestyle of neglect into continuance. The Constables need to be notified by someone who has seen this.

Normal, rationally thinking people do not choose to live in a tent in the woods while begging for food, alcohol or drug money. This is not good.

@Sammee :

I think those are the operative words...unfortunately, most homeless are well aware of the resources out there to help. Sadly, you can't help those who refuse to help themselves.

I'm willing to bet a good majority of those who "choose" to live on the streets are mentally impaired in some way. Emoticon

But I hate that they drag innocent kids with them. There should most definitely be stricter laws against that. I'm planning on driving by a few times today and, if I see anything that indicates kids involved, the constables will be getting a call from me. Not sure what, if anything, they can (or will!) do about the adults.

OFE parents, keep your eyes on this situation! You have bigger dogs in this race than some of the rest of us!

When it comes to crippling mental illnesses, the system is reactive instead of being proactive. It is very sad that there aren't more resources to help those suffering from mental illness. A person cannot be forced into treatment, which is exactly what they need at times.

Why doesn't someone send their pastor over there and see what your church can do to help.

@
You are so wrong in so many ways. There are 0 shelters in this area. The closest ones are downtown Houston and Conroe. Resources??? Very little and again they are downtown. The shelters are at capacity and with waiting lists AND in contrast to what most people believe SSI and SSDI programs are extremely hard to get into. The denial rate for first time applicants is about 95%, 2cd time applicants get denied85% -3rd timers about70%. HUD vouchers are not being issued here in TX at this time- section 8/11 ( HUD for for special needs) has about a 4 year wait because there are so few apartments for special needs adults. Many other resources require acceptance into SSI and SSDI programs.
How do I know this?? Because I have a special needs adult son. Long story short. He applied for SSI and SSDI back in Aug 2013- he JUST got accepted in June of this year- almost 3 years. He had to hire a lawyer who specializes in SSDI for special needs inorder to finally receive benefits.
He lost his HUD 8/11. Housing in May due to a mental breakdown and property was destroyed. He was homeless for a short period of time when we found him and put him in a hotel until we could find housing. We searched for 2 months for housing- it's a catch 22- most resources ( beyond shelter) require acceptance into a government program like SSI and SSDI. There were no openings in any shelter within a 100 miles of here because of the flooding back in May.
There are no mental institutions-except for the criminally insane.so private group homes are available but very costly anywhere from 2,000- 7,000 a MONTH and insurance doesn't pay. Living with family isn't always possible ( as in our case).

We went through most of our savings helping him and we are still having to pay for part of his rent until the benefits start. We won't be able to retire and after we die-well I don't want to think about that.

Not here to criticize just to educate- I don't know who these homeless folks are but I can tell you that many homeless folks arare exactly like my son and many of them don't choose to live this way and would love to work and have normal lives. I know there are homeless that are addicts and do choose this life also but I just wanted to give you a different perspective of a homeless person- my adult son.
