This week in our "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series,
we sat down with John and Sandy Ledbetter, New Owners of Dogtopia!
Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
For many Atascocita families, dogs are more than pets—they’re our beloved members of the family. That’s exactly

how
the new owners at Dogtopia of Atascocita see it, too. Dogtopia of
Atascocita is now family owned and operated by John and Sandy Ledbetter,
daughter Chelsea, son-in-law Todd and Todd’s dad (aka “the other
grandpa”!). They love living out Dogtopia’s Noble Cause that brings joy,
exercise, and socialization to pups helping them live long, healthy,
happy lives—and peace of mind to pet parents.
The
Dogtopia of Atascocita team has operated two other Dogtopia daycare
centers for the past eight years. Both locations are Top Dog certified
and both are in the top 10 performers in Dogtopia country-wide.
Chelsea’s
love of animals started young, turning her childhood dream of a
bustling, joy-filled dog daycare into a thriving family business. As a
little girl,

Chelsea
ran her own “Faithful Fido’s” pet care service right from the family
home—at times juggling up to 15 dogs under one roof! She once declared
she’d have 50 dogs playing in her living room one day. Today, she
surpassed that childhood goal with over 200 dogs enjoying the benefits
of Dogtopia's two other Woodlands-area locations.
From
bacon-flavored bubble chases and themed doggie parties to supervised
group play and enrichment games, every detail at Dogtopia is designed to
make tails wag. And that joy doesn’t end with the dogs—pet parents are
known to report their dogs leaping with excitement at just the mention
of “Dogtopia!”
But Dogtopia’s impact goes far
beyond daycare. Over the past seven years, the Ledbetter family has
worked to build not just a business, but a hub for community

connection.
They’ve supported local schools, churches, and sports teams through
fundraising and event donations, and partnered with the Dogtopia
Foundation to raise nearly $200,000 for veterans in need of service
dogs. Their “Give One” volunteer program also extends support globally,
including preparing meals for children in need overseas.
When
asked what makes Dogtopia different, John points to their commitment to
excellence and heart. “Our mission is summarized in the Dogtopia Noble
Cause: to enhance the joy of pet parenthood and enable dogs to
positively change our world. It’s more than a motto—it’s how we live
every day.”
Looking ahead, the Ledbetters are
excited to continue growing the Dogtopia family, with a fourth location
planned for next year. But no matter how large the business grows, the
heart of Dogtopia remains rooted in community, care, and the belief that
every dog deserves a joyful, healthy life—and every parent deserves the
support to give it

to them.
How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
Our
daughter Chelsea is the VP and Regional Manager for all three daycare
facilities – she earned high honors graduating Magna Cum Laude from
Texas A&M in 2018 with a degree in Animal Science. At age 12,
Chelsea had a dream of starting her own business to provide doggie
daycare services when neighbors and friends in the community were on
vacation or out of town for an extended period. Chelsea did not want dog
owners to be sad when they traveled and had to leave their furry
children behind, so she started Faithful Fido’s as her business at 10
years old.
How we got started is a fun story.
John had recently retired from Liberty Mutual after 30 years, was bored
with “retirement” and looking for something fun to do. At about the same
time, Chelsea was a Junior at Texas A&M and after taking several
pre-veterinary school classes involving euthanizing animals, shadowing
veterinarians, etc… she decided that Veterinary school was not for her.
With her animal expertise and John’s business experience, Dogtopia was a
perfect fit for the two of us. When she was a little girl, Chelsea
brought joy to pet parents and their

furry
children by providing daycare and boarding at her house – now she is
now continuing her Faithful Fido’s legacy at Dogtopia with more than 250
dogs playing at our three Dogtopia locations.

Tell us a few things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
Oh
gosh, there are so many. We are known for providing the safest and
highest quality doggie daycare in our community. Backed by science,
guided by love, and built with safety at the forefront, Dogtopia is no
ordinary daycare. With expert input from environmental biologists,
veterinarians, and credentialed trainers, they’ve created a play-based
environment where dogs thrive—mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Their award-winning DASH activity tracker helps tailor each pup’s day to
support long-term health and happiness. Think of it as a Fitbit for
your furry friend—helping extend their lives with regular movement,
play, and connection.
The rigorous training of
our coaches in the playrooms with the dogs is second to none. Training
consists of a certification program that includes 40 hours of online
training videos, a week in the playrooms one-on-one with the trainers
and then follow-up training including 30 hours of online instructional
videos and in-room follow-up training and mentoring by our certified
trainers.
Pet parents LOVE our live webcams in
every room so they can check in periodically and see the fun their pup
is having and the love and affection given to them by our trained
coaches.
We make EVERY DAY THE MOST EXCITING
DAY EVER for our pups in our high-energy, fun daycare environment. And
every dog plays all day long – not put in a crate for hours or only let
out periodically in “play groups”.
What is your favorite part of running this business?
The
best part of the business is of course playing with all the wonderful
and joy-filled DOGS! A close second favorite is Dogtopia’s commitment to
give back to our community with The Dogtopia Foundation. At our other
two locations our customers have partnered with us to help our
incredible Veterans dealing with PTSD and other life issues to raise
almost $200,000 for the Dogtopia Foundation to provide our incredible
Veterans with a fully-trained

service dog to assist them in their daily lives.
Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Our
ideal customers want the very best for their dog’s health and wellness
and will invest in daycare 2-3 days/week to ensure their dog lives a
long, healthy, happy life. The female Millennials that will do “anything
for my baby” are our best long-term and loyal customer followed by the
Gen X and Boomer professionals with both spouses working and don’t want
their dog sitting at home all day alone.
Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
John
and Sandy have been active in their community for more than 30 years
and wanted to engage in a business that would give something great back
to the community. John coached multiple sports with YMCA, Rush Soccer,
SMGSL, turned a parking area to a softball field and started the girls
fast-pitch softball program at The Woodlands Christian Academy. Sandy
spent more than 20 years teaching at The Woodlands Christian Academy and
the family has been extensively involved with their church for more
than 30 years.
Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
Both
of our current locations are TOP DOG certified by Dogtopia as
confirmation of exceeding the highest quality, safety and operational
standards. We are a high energy, high excitement dog daycare facility
and host 2-3 events each week to ensure every dog has “The Most Exciting
Day Ever At Dogtopia” every day. Customers tell us all the events are
the number one reason they use Dogtopia instead of other daycares.
For
our new ownership reopening starting Jan 15th, we are offering a
special for new customers to bring their dog to play in daycare on an
unlimited basis for $89 for the first two months.
Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
Our
customers love us for our exceptional customer service in a world where
customer service has all but disappeared. Customers tell us often that
with their hurry-hurry-hurry world, the convenience of our drop-off

“carpool
line” (just like at the kids school) is one of the best customer
service experiences for them. The websites for our two Woodlands
locations have many more details that will be updated on the Atascocita
location website very soon.
How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
We
will grow to become known as the safest and highest quality dog daycare
and overnight stay facility in the Atascocita/Kingwood/Humble area. As
the excitement grows with every dog having “The Most Exciting Day Ever
at Dogtopia”, word spreads quickly and pet parents want the very best
for their babies.
