True. But at the same time he could have vetoed it and let them attempt to override it if he was so inclined. The fact of the matter is as head of his party he did it for the same political reasons we are discussion now.

I'll agree that the flow of drugs has been devastating to this country. Probably hurt this country more than ISIS ever will. Probably should have invaded Mexico to kill off the cartels instead of Iraq.

I would highly doubt in retrospect, that Reagan would find that an acceptable solution if he had to make that decision today.
The US government does not even see it as a problem...except for that pesky law that keeps getting in the way.

I agree that there is more to securing the border than just the illegals coming in. No doubt. And, I agree that we need to defend against drugs and guns, etc., coming into the country.

@tb505

Maybe Huckabee is right - maybe they are mostly nice people. But, just because they are nice people does not give them a pass to get into the U.S.A. illegally. We have a system in place to allow people to come to this country LEGALLY. If they are "hard-working, faith-based, conservative people", let them follow the rules.

@nikkole

I think that you are correct. There is a surge of anti-immigrant fervor in the U.S. and the government doesn't WANT to do what needs to be done. They want to sit on the fence - take steps to stop the flow of illegals to appease the conservatives but they don't want to stop the flow so they appease the liberal immigrants who are already here and voting. So, they take purposefully ineffective action.

That way, even if they come into the country, they will not be able to find work, not be able to find a place to stay, not be able to educate their children, buy a car, or anything. So, why come?

Wouldn't work...As it stands now, most are already working "under the table"...They'll find a way around it...We have too many businesses who think so highly of "cheap labor" to keep their profit margins high, that I'd bet they even help them find ways around any legal barriers set up...Many come here solo to make money to send back to their families who they've left in Mexico or wherever and they'll share living space and transportation...

This issue has been ignored for decades so what would you do about the fragmented families(example: kids are citizens, one or both parents "illegal")?

The flow of drugs and everything bad that goes along with that, is unreal and have devastating consequences on the population (all races).

But before Trump casts blame, he may want to consider why they traffic the drugs in the first place? There's obviously a market for them...Then he should consider what "The Market" for them consists of...He is a "business man" so he should be able to relate...Cocaine: What's the market demographic?(tip:it's pretty expensive), Meth (I thought this was homemade, but we'll go with it being imported for sake of argument): Who's buying this stuff? etc...

Mexican meth is stronger and cheaper of course, and fast out pacing the local producers. Houston and Dallas are the two top money making cities for imported Meth. (great series on Nat Geo about this very subject)

But good point on the demand aspect...one might start that thread, as I am sure there are many theories.

See, I think it will work. That is why you put the $25,000 bounty out. If you put out that much money, it is an incentive to turn in those who are working beside you or living next door, or whatever. The workers know what is going on - and the people living around you know what is going on. And $25K is probably about as much as some of the low income people make in a year. A year's income just for turning in an illegal? I would think that would work.

And, maybe it is not the best plan. But, trying to stop the supply, when the demand is so strong, will never work. Just as with the drugs, you have to kill the demand. Then the supply will stop all by iteself.

I may not agree with his statement,however he has the right to say what he wishes. Yes,immigration is a hot button topic,yet we are all immigrants. Last time I read history everyone's ancestors came to the United States on a boat. Don't spit out negative,find a solution.
