With the return of the golf course we will probable see an increase is cart traffic in the future. Most of the cart use on streets that I've seen has be in a responsible manner. As with most things it's the 1% that ruins it for all.

Yep. And, the golf carts think that they don't have to stop for the crossing guard and kids in the crosswalk, I guess because they drive their carts on the sidewalk. My DD and were nearly hit...in the crosswalk with the guard stopping traffic...by a cart driver who was turned around backwards talking to the crossing guard while she was driving. She then had the nerve to get mad when I didn't tell her, "That's OK" when she apologized. It wasn't OK....you are in a vehicle driving irresponsibly and almost take out my kindergartner and me and want me to forgive your stupidity? I don't think so.

@Sammee Agree. It is NOT okay and she should have been happy you didn't say anything at all vs. What she deserves to hear.

That was a few years ago. I called the school and complained because the guard should have made the cart wait just like all of the other vehicles.

@Smokeybear :
Tx moped & scooter license requirements are if under 18 you have to get a class C learners permit or valid Tx drivers license Pass a drivers education course before taking a state approved motorcycle safety course . And you have to be 15 to get a learners permit to drive a car & have taken drivers education . And if there are no laws for golf carts then parents need to be half *** smart & figure out that those same rules should apply for the safety of kids driving golf carts .

So this I think has nothing to do with how responsible some are driving the cart, it's to do with parents not stopping & thinking about just how dangerous a situation they are permitting their child to be in & others taking a walk down the street . I see this all the time & I feel like parents are putting whats fun for their kids over their & others safety .

I really really think it depends on the neighborhood and the general situation. I'm not talking about the laws but just the safety and commons sense part of it. I would never cross 1960 on a golf cart or allow my kids to drive a golf cart on major roads in Eagle Springs. If my kids were out cruising in the cart on 1960 they would WISH they had a head injury compared to punishment they would get.

On the beach? Or out in the Commons, out in little country neighborhoods - honestly for me that becomes a maybe...

EVERYONE in the Commons gets around on carts, Polaris, etc. That is how we get to community events and to one another's houses and to all our amenities within the neighborhood. Some are on horses, some are in carts, some on bikes. We expect it and folks drive really slowly in our neighborhood especially around the pool, the beach and parks.

Even the mail delivery lady parks the mail truck at the end of the street and delivers the mail by golf cart.

@Cabin_Mama :
I'd think if you have to be a certain age to drive a car & a moped & have to take classes to do so that parents should apply those same rules to golf carts that are driven down the street . To me that is just common sense concerning a child's safety & those they come in contact with .

bleeding from his ears and nose.....which is very bad. I don't know who they were or if the boy ever recovered. Traumatic brain injuries can be life-alteringly tragic. It haunts me that I could have possibly prevented that, but didn't.

@Sammee :
His parents I'm sure wish they had prevented it by keeping the keys where the kids could not get to them or by not letting them do it . So sad for all involved .

When a golf cart is driving on the street , are they/should they be required to drive closest to the sidewalk so that the car can pass safely at 30mph.. or does the cart have the right of way on the road and the car needs to follow behind at 15mph? Curious, I don't know..

Most golf carts are not street legal. It doesn't take much to get them legal and then get a license. Kids would still have to be legal age. I have one in the rental program for the beach house but have almost stopped renting because of the kids driving. They are pretty safe in the neighborhood but they get them in the saltwater and then the thing dies. Oh, my kid didn't get it in the water.....lift the seat and the battery compartment has water all in it. There is too much crazy traffic here. I thought about bringing one here just to go close but no...too dangerous.

How about the little boy and girl who race up and down Spoonwood Drive in a go-cart and a little battery operated motorcycle. Definitely not safe. Too many cars and trucks on the street. I have yet to see a parent with these kids.

Can't you get a DWI from driving a golf cart intoxicated along w a riding lawnmower. ( yes small town humor) but they are classified as motorized vehicles so they have to obey traffic laws like a car and can get the same tickets!
