With an exoneration or sentence overturn rate of almost 10%, I'm not sure why this is controversial.I would almost say life in prison is worse than just being put to death.But that at least gives you a chance to live some if you are exonerated.

Many innocent people railroaded to convictions are wrongly executed, so are the many that are extremely deserving of death.When ca did this in the 70s all death row inmates eventually became parole eligible as they did not have a life without parole option.I wonder if that has changed.Makes good sound bites, but folks need to be educated on a bit to understand reasoning. Not a black and white issue

It is a financial decision. Guilty or not has nothing to do with it. Death row inmates get almost unlimited appeals, with the lawyers on both sides, and their staffs, being paid by the state, as well as the time and expenses of the judges and court clerks and other support staff. Numerous studies have been conducted in California and other states, as well as outside the USA, showing just the incarceration costs alone of death row inmates is higher than that of other inmates, even that of inmates kept in solitary confinement for various reasons.

ParksideRes : Nope, I want them to stop getting so many appeals. Cost go down then. I want violent criminals out of society. So if I have to choose then I pick death penalty. If one innocent dies out of every 10 criminals that is the fault of the police, judges, jury, appeals process and so forth. It should not happen that one person is convicted of a heinous crime that gets the death penalty and they are really innocent. I don't think it does happen that often. There are movies though.

It's just waiting for death.But at least gives the innocents caught up in it time to go through the process.The truly guilty go nowhere.That is the raw reality. Innocent people are and have been on death row.

So you are ignoring the families of the victims? For a person to be put to death a conviction is based on a beyond a reasonable doubt. Has innocent people been convicted yes but they are a very small group as compared to the actual guilty ones.
