Why do I think that is? The NFA of 1934 was passed due to the gangland crimes of the 20's and 30's of the Prohibition era. So, one bad government action (prohibition) lead to increase in crime, scaring the population, which accepted the "common sense" restrictions of the NFA.
Every time a gun control proponent throws in an argument the phrases "reasonable restrictions" or "common sense" it usually isn't... simple as that.
