I believe we disagree on some things here....simply put, any organization that founds itself based on race, is fatally flawed....because any, that are not of that race will view them as inherently racist to begin with. They are divisive, not diverse. My opinion any way.
Anyway, I visit NY often on business, and very much like to do so....mainly to eat pizza, nothing like it anywhere.

@Fairlane67:

I know nothing of the current NAACP. I do believe there would still be places in the South where black citizens could not vote had there not been an organized effort to change the culture. I say culture because in most cases the laws were on the books but were being ignored.

All organizations are flawed.

I've noticed a trend here in that the posters here who complain about the NAACP also complain about the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday holiday, Juneteenth, United Negro College Fund.

I could completely ignore/not respond to these posts except newcomers' impressions of the community concern me.

@1979tata:

Are you stating or believe that we now live in a post-racial society? That discrimination by race is no longer an issue? I may agree with you in stating that we've removed most, if not all, language for our law books, however I think it's dangerously naive to believe discrimination by race is relic of an past era. What about discrimination by other means such as gender, nationality, sexual orientation? Should all of the groups that advocate for equality for these folks also be disbanded?

As much as I would love to change hearts and minds of people, these organizations are less about that as a goal and more to remove institutionalized discrimination - that kind that affects how people get jobs, go to school, receive public services, etc.

No and No.

IMO.....with respect....

Differentiation works against being equal.

NAACP is an US vs. THEM organization - Period.

NAACP hinders US from becoming WE.

To me it seems many still want it to be us and them.

Do people want equal?
or
Do people want Differentiation?

@1979tata:

I can agree with you on some of this, but not all. For instance, I don't fully understand the Miss Black America pageant, but I really don't understand 'beauty' pageants of any sort. I remember when we would have had to get out the smelling salts if a black woman had entered the Miss America pageant but that is no longer the case, though there is no doubt in my mind that white women dominate the pageant. As that changes, so will the pageants.

I totally support the UNCF - why not? I believe those who donate to scholarships have the right to choose who gets their money.

You choose to support the UNCF. Good. I agree. Choose.

When others choose not to support/hire/...... certain folks.

Affirmative action and Hiring Quotas come into play and the alarms go off - as that is unfair.

Our society is not far enough removed from the hurts and segregation of the past. I don't think we'll see that type of blind equality in our lifetimes.

@nikkiole:

Nik segregation ended 30 years before you were born..... It's over , let it go....
You can never get past the struggle if you keep bringing up the struggle

@1979tata:

I dunno....Just looking at the math of it:

One group stands at about 72% of the population, about 224,346,180.
The other group is at about 13% of the population, about 40,506,949.

That's a difference of only 183,839,231....
