I'm a long time watcher of this board.. I learn a lot of useful information here about my new adopted state and town here.. I post infrequently.. just don't have the much time - 2 toddlers.. 10-12-hour days @ the job... 25 mile commute downtown.. you get it.. I love to read about how everyone recommends great places or services in the area, etc.. It feels welcoming! It feels like a COMMUNITY I love raising my daughters in..

Until... the conversation start to talk about the RACE, CLASS, and POLITICS.

I see decent diversity in 77346 (i just assume most of us all live in it). so I wonder can these threads be taken as a sample of the the community OFFLINE? When you see my black face in HEB, BB, Alspaughs, VERON's meet market, am I to assume I fit in a box I see so often mentioned here.. Obama supporter.. so he must support huge government spending.. oh he's for increasing the minimum wage.. and he's got a have that free healthcare.

What happened to celebrating diversity and respecting differences of opinions?? Is it so much that separates us it nullifies what brings us together?

To this thread specifically, I was raised in a very different part of the country with very different demographics witch, I imagine, different perspectives and views.. so when I hear mention of NAACP on THIS board, I know never to imagine that it's good.. I can tell you for anyone comparing that organization to the KKK... wow.. But why stop there.. what about UNCF? Or the Southern Poverty Law Center? ADL, ACLU, NOW? I gather as I look at the majority demographics of the area most NOT are card-carrying members of many of these institutions! LOL.. But understand: at some time and somewhere these organizations have done their best to help SOMEONE because it was needed. Just like SECTION 8 program (yes I've seen that thread too) and many other programs. Some of these threads started on here and and opinions I've read are thinly-veiled statements of racism (at worst) or class-ism (at best.) I apologize for offending anyone.. not my intent.. I just want to be respected for everything I have in common with all of you good folks just as much for the diversity I bring and I hear a lot of you bash.. REPEATEDLY.. on this site.. In the end.. it's not just a board.. we're a COMMUNITY.

I think Mac made it clear he was referring to modern KKK. And like the Black Panther groups....no longer the violent groups they were but still a strict ideological group with no room for diversity. I believe the NAACP fits within that category as well.
That being said....looking at the posts of the dozen or so regular posters on this board, and assuming any of us/them represent the community as a whole, is fairly narrow as well.
Welcome, I hope you and your family love it here as much as mine.

Perhaps.... But I have seen people on here that have said the same about the Tea Party and nothing has been said by you or Joe..... And that happens weekly....

^^^ I would bet that almost noone on here knows much about the NAACPs current or full operations these days; only soundbites that talking heads present in order to incite the masses.

do you REALLY wonder why you keep seeing the posts?

Although I don't recall them being brought up much - maybe I am just not paying much attention to it....

?? 'modern KKK'? There's a difference? There's diversity now? Does that mean I can apply for membership?? LOL. Seriously though i just don't know what that means or should mean to me. I'm not sure you can compare the Black Panther Party to that of the KKK. Both the NAACP and BPP missions and goals were to support members in black communities that were under-served and under-represented. What BPP and KKK did have in common was their use of violence. but for entirely different reasons.. Excuseable = no; explaineable = definitely. You'd have to respect what both of these organizations wanted to do for a community of ppl nationwide that was treated as inferior not that long ago in American history. I'll contend a better comparison to the KKK, imo, is the Nazi Party!

As for representation, I never said as a whole; apologies if it was taken that way. I don't know the exact % and math of how many users that post regularly here are representative of the community, but I'd venture to say the opinions shared here online are shared by many in the real world on both sides of the sprectrum. I'd bet good money! For the most part, it's a compliment: Many threads I read here illustrate we've got a commununity of hard-working, productive members in the community.

Lastly - I sincerely thank you for the the welcome.. we've been here 6 years now. I would not have imagined as a youth growing up in south Queens, NY ever providing my children with the space to run around in a yard the size we now have or the services available here many back home (still) only dream of - clean parks, walkways, good PUBLIC schools, SAFTEY, etc. all of this to simply state: I love where I live.. and I've lived all over - but I haven't forgotten where I started. The help many of these programs and services (or similar) have provided me at one point in time or another has proven invaluable to my present and sustained success. We can still have our differences, we just don't need to be **** about them - do we?

P.S = NEW BPP are a bunch of nuts! and have NOTHING in common to the BPP of the past.

I believe we disagree on some things here....simply put, any organization that founds itself based on race, is fatally flawed....because any, that are not of that race will view them as inherently racist to begin with. They are divisive, not diverse. My opinion any way.
Anyway, I visit NY often on business, and very much like to do so....mainly to eat pizza, nothing like it anywhere.

I respect your opinion, however it's too easy a response to provide today that these orgs or divisive or irrevelent vs. days of the past. A question I've asked myself (though not often) is could I have lived where I live now 60 years ago - in the 1950s? Would I have had to live in a segregated community in 3rd ward or many other places AAs were restricted to? Must I have had to enroll in inadequate schools with inferior materials and subpar services compared to more 'affluent' communities? Could I have been afforded the same job opportunities? Though I'll never know the real answer it's a safe bet to say the odds would have been against me. The NAACP and similar organizations fought those battles because others would/could not. These organizations still exist today to fight injustice. I don't want to sound like a broken record, but it's no secret the US has had a long issue with race and racism and how it has influenced and dictated the lives of many. The world has progressed a lot over the years and changes in mindsets has made available many new opportunities, but there's still much to do.

If you're a frequent visitor to back east then you know exactly what I'm talking about when I mention the differences of here vs. there. Think about that view outside your cab ride from either Kennedy and LaGuardia airports before heading into the city.. that unglamorous, people-on-top-of people view was home! LOL. By the way, I refuse to eat pizza most place here.. Grimaldi's in Woodlands and Romano's on Gray St... fuggedaboutit!

@ItsJustTrev:

You are probably correct, I had an Uncle in the 50-60's and he didn't spell the word with an "a" anywhere in it.
Today, of his nine grandchildren - two are happily in bi-racial marriages. Many on here did not live in the 50's - 60's.
