Students build free mini library at LSC-Kingwood campus

The English Department at Lone Star College-Kingwood had tons of books with no home. The English and Engineering departments worked together to construct the Little Free Library on campus. This mini library is located on the patio of the Science Instructional Building.

The new library has a motto: “take a book, leave a book.”

English students shared their ideas with the engineering graphics class in an online community group, who, in turn, researched designs, sketched preliminary concepts, and created a plan in CAD. Doug Turner served as their technician, using their drawings to build the library.

The Little Free Library committee used a $500 mini-grant to pay for building supplies such as plywood, edging, hardware, plexiglass, posts, varnish, shelving, roof shingles, air vents, fan, solar panel, battery, chalkboard, guestbook, and decor. It has a chalkboard, shelves with air vents, an air roof and solar panel mount with the college logo, an attic shelf to hold batteries, fans & wires. It also has a cup filled with affirmations that students can take on their way to class.

The engineering/design team members are Catherine Thomas, Bruno Samame, Elmer Moran, Garrett Stevens, Griffin Billings, Corbin Whitaker, and Blake Rossen.

Starting in the fall, the college will host monthly themed events for various topics.

The Little Free Library at LSC-Kingwood is open to employees, students, and the community.

@Weathergirl5 : We have a few of these in the neighborhood. I love these! I know that there is a "real" library, but it can be a pain to return the books. I much prefer buying a used book and then donating it or doing the leave/take book deal. It is always fun to pass by and see what is in there.

@TheCatsMeow : The Groves. We absolutely love it. Tons and tons of amenities. Plus we have a fulltime activity coordinator that plans several activities a month. She does a great job. We've had mother's day brunch, live bands, comedians, Easter egg hunts, crawfish boils, Diwali celebration, you name it. Plus weekly classes in Yoga, HIIT, and Zumba.

@RajunCajun : I thought that might be the case; my daughter teaches first grade at Groves Elementary. Great school.
