Had one of these crawling around on my patio. 😳 Had to smush it...didn't want the dogs trying to get it...just in case. I mean it's pretty but...

@West-Tex : People call it a red velvet ant...aka cow killer ant... but it's actually a wasp. The scientific name is too long to remember 😂

Since it's predominately red, betting its sting is pretty tough! Please be careful!!! Red in nature usually signals "danger."

Yeah...Several covered the basics about it above...If you've got these in your yard, make sure nobody(such as any kiddos) go barefoot around your place as the sting is quite painful if they step on them....
 
I'm not going to look it up but there was a YouTube video where a guy took a sting from one to "rate" it(He also took stings from other insects and rated those too)....
 
I had a "season" or two where there were a few in my back yard....But never anything lasting....

BTW, females of this species have no wings, therefore there confused as ants by many. So, males can fly when going somewhere, while females have to walk.
