Can anyone refresh my memory on the shooting that happened at this fools home? Name of the kid that was killed? (pm me). Thanks trying to remember if I knew the kid from when I worked in the district.
The biggest thing I observed working in the district is that kids learn very quickly and from a young age that there really are no true consequences for bad behavior! When you have a second grader who is so disruptive in class that there is a school security officer standing outside the door what is that teaching the kid?! Why is that student even allowed in a gen ed classroom?? How can the rest of the students learn when there's so much disruption every day?

@cementditch : I'm sure it's been stated on the other pages of this thread...but just in case someone missed it, this is the kid that pulled a knife on Coach Murphy at the middle school a few years ago.

@cementditch : Taught in the district for years. A lot is swept under the rug:drugs and guns and sex on campus.

@skunk : And that's the thing, isn't it? Certainly not a GOOD thing, but I haven't heard a single thing, rumor or fact, that didn't happen at my high school. Or DW's high school. Sex, cutting class, getting stoned / drunk / tripping DURING the school day. Fights. Shootings. Tragic deaths. Pregnancy.Of course steps should be made to improve and minimize these actions - but what I am saying to the parents is don't feel hopeless or panicked. They didn't invent this. Stay calm, and keep loving / teaching your kids!

@scamp : You are right about that. They didn't invent it and we are so wildly aware of their every move because of social media and cell phones. Our response is what will make the difference.

@skunk : swept under the rug? Or may they just can't report everything. And they don't have to in my opinion. My wife teaches in the district and my kids both went through there. The district has its faults, as all do, but they don't hide the truth in some overarching way.
