Let me help with that...

too many mikes in his face.

"And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?" Bundy continued. "They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I've often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn't get no more freedom. They got less freedom."

What Cliven Bundy's comments on race reveal

In a press conference Thursday, Bundy defended and repeated his comments but emphasized he was merely "wondering" whether African-Americans were better off as slaves.

"And that's a question I put before the world: Are they better, or were they better then? I'm not saying I thought they should be slaves, or I wasn't even saying they was (sic) better off; I'm wondering if they're better off," he said.

supporters can't jump off his bandwagon fast enough - maybe this is rime time for uncle sam to complete the graze thieving cattle roundup. Losts of homeless would appreciate a rib-eye dinner.

The fact tht he made some incredibly stupid comments, had ZERO to do with the govt showing up with massive amounts of firepower and killing his cattle......

This is spin and distraction ...... That's all....

His personal views are just that personal, however how ignorant they might be.....

Harry Reid calling his supporters domestic terrorists is what pisses me off.... He is an elected official.... He should be recalled for those comments.... But people like y'all focus on what a nobody rancher thinks.....

Wake up people

@Undecided:

Well, it was the issue in 1993. And the fees aren't $1 mil...the media doesn't like to report the facts. More like $300k, which the man would have gladly paid over the years except that.....

Guy was told to reduce his herd by 85% (1000 head vs mandated 150). That would have basically put him out of business...just like the 49 other ranchers who existed in Clark County then and now don't. They just ran into a stubborn fool with this one.

At the end of the day, I can't find a white hat in this deal. Government has lots more remedies to collect than sending teams of agents dressed and armed as if they were in Afghanistan or Iraq. And Mr Bundy turned his argument into something stupid and indefensible. He doesn't have a legal argument in any sense....he USED to have a good emotional plea (family business being forced out), but he pivoted to a stupid place with the ill informed constitutional argument.

But, yeah, this was about grazing and the fact that environmentalists hate the grazers....and the greenies figured out long ago how to manipulate the politicians and regulators to get their way.

Bottom line, Bundy hasn't got a legal leg to stand on, period. And he is his own worst spokesman. OTOH, Feds should not be collecting debts with SWAT teams. I've developed a thought on why law enforcement looks like military personnel these days....another post, another time (Jerry Lee Lewis)

And @redneckroy

I know you were trying to be funny with the free ribeye comment, but it is worth noting that the Feds, by rule (such that anyone in Govt plays by the rules these days), have to place confiscated property up for auction. So, free ribeyes ( even though they would suck from brush cattle) won't happen. More importantly, no auction barns within reasonable driving distance would accept the repo'd cattle. At that point, the Feds had a choice......take responsibility for the expense of caring for the repo'd bovine, pay a lot more for shipping them to a site that would accept them, or return them. They have a budget for bullets and vests, but they prolly don't have a cost category for cattle storage. **** off the greenies with that decision.

Finally, I haven't touched on the Sen Reid angle.....this does reach to that level, albeit one step removed. I'll also save that for another time.

Lots of dumb **** in this deal, but provoked a lot of thought and discussion on my other haunts. I got more....but the Fairlane on my shoulder says I'm pushing the limit now. So......

Lots of fault to go around - very true; after 20 yrs of head butting - why wouldn't anyone believe the gov't would enforce their actions. Seems reasonable in any other legal action. I don't know if I would/wouldn't sympathize with Bundy in this - other than the fact that we all deal with a load of Gov't BS we aren't happy about - but we do it to comply with the law - and out of appreciation / respect for our country/ system /laws.

This fellow seems to think he and his family are above all of that - he has lost all legal recourse - politicians haven't solved it for him. And people think he's a hero?

I miss that somehow.

Good point on the lack of gov't ability to easily auction off the cattle - but I don't know if I believe they couldn't easily find a buyer - lots of foreign or business interests that lack the compassion angle - kind of like auctioning off foreclosed farms - lots of buyers.

@ Macdaddy - why is Harry Reid's comments a major issue but Bundy's reasoning ability a meaningless distraction from the real issue? To me Bundy IS the issue - while Harry Reid, CNN, MSNBC and FOX news are the distractions.

I don't think this is all as simple as the media makes this out to be. If you look at what the BLM is attempting along the Red River in Texas....it is not about any fees...it is about land grabbing. The fight is already on in that situation, as the Feds are claiming to own property that is not theirs to own.

Other thoughts come to mind as I read some comments...How does the Feds claim land as "public" and then keep the "public" out?

How come the "king" of idiotic, foot in mouth, ignorance, Joe Biden, gets to keep being the Vice President, if dumb commentary is a condition of being right or wrong on a particular issue?

I have some questions, too.

So was this land made available for homesteading way back when and nobody wanted it or what?

Why should this be made into a liberal/conservative/democrat/republican issue?

Would you show up armed ready to take on federal agents?

Why do we blame the press? Are we too lazy to think for ourselves?

Roy,
Harry Reid works for the people of Nevada ....
He is an elected official.....
Bundy is a cattle rancher....

Why do you care what a white cattle rancher says or believes..... His ignorant comments have no bearing on this issue...
I can't believe how easy you people are willing to give up your rights now....it's a scary thought

Al sharpton is a blatant racist but I don't see y'all complaining about him ...

Fairlane, you are absolutely right

@macdaddy:

Because the entire issue is in regards to Bundy; and his violation of federal land use rights - that is why (and the only reason why) he matters.

What rights are being given up?

by the way - for the most part - I have ignored this story. Although I don't agree with Bundy - I don't find it particularly concerning - I do however find his foolish comments sad/amusing. I also find it amusing/unfortunate when these media or political interest groups thrust someone into the spotlight as a rally beacon - only to find the flaws only after working to establish an association.

@Fairlane67:

I don't think it is a matter of keeping the public out at all. If the land was free for anyone to put as many cattle on to graze as they wished - it would lead to catastrophic overcrowding and overgrazing of the land.
It by logic has to be managed. I won't claim to know enough about how it is being managed to have an opinion of whether it is right or wrong. But it is what it is - federal land - managed by the feds - so they do get to make the rules that everyone has to live by. If they don't like the rules - the solution is in the ballot box - not in the thumbing the nose at laws you don't wish to comply with.
