Update: Wife and Mother Reported Among Wounded in Fatal Humble Softball Shooting

Harris County investigators were told that Jarmon Mattix's wife and mother were among the three people wounded in Sunday night's shooting at Fall Creek Sports Complex in Humble. Mattix, a 36-year-old father of three, died at the scene. Deputies responded around 9:24 PM on October 18th after an argument during a softball game escalated into a physical fight and gunfire in the parking lot, according to HCSO. Another man and the two women were taken to a hospital. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in his October 19th morning advisory that all three were expected to survive.

It was alleged by a nearby bystander that Mattix and another man both drew guns during the parking-lot confrontation. She said children were also present and that she did not know what initially caused the dispute. Mattix's sister, Destiny Williams, also alleged that she heard racial slurs before the shooting and believed her brother was targeted because of a racial bias. Gonzalez said the allegation had not been included in preliminary briefings but would be examined.

HCSO said potential shooters were detained for questioning and weapons were recovered. No charges have been filed as of Gonzalez's October 19th morning advisory. Investigators were still working to determine what exactly happened. The accounts of the confrontation and claims about racial slurs and a possible motive remain allegations under investigation. Detention for questioning does not establish criminal guilt.
