New Texas law requiring seatbelts on all school buses. From the internet Texas Senate Bill 546 requires all school buses in the state to have three-point seat belts by the 2029-2030 school year. This unfunded mandate forces districts to bear high costs-roughly $30,000-$70,000 to retrofit or $100,000-$185,000 to replace each bus. In Harris County, for instance, Humble ISD faces a estimated $13.5 million to comply.

Money is the reason they've never put seat belts in the buses before. The only buses that had seat belts were the buses for the special needs kids.
I don't know how the school districts are going to afford this.

Even if they do put seat belts in every school bus, you're now putting a burden on the drivers to make these kids buckle up. Good luck with that. Especially, the middle school and high school kids. Many of them can be so non-compliant.

The drivers coming to pick my son up does that already. His regular bus does have seat belts. Last field trip I went with for my daughter their school busses had seat belts. Too much gloom and doom.

I'm glad to hear that the bus that carries your child has seatbelts. It may be the newer buses are coming with seat belts. If this is the case, the old buses can be put to the bus graveyard. Lol

Finally! I have long wondered why they didn't have them when transporting such precious cargo.

I have an image of a bus driver walking down the aisle checking to see if the kids are buckled just like the flight attendants do. lol. I'm wondering if the kids will actually buckle up. I'm imagining a bus driver that won't care if they are buckled.
when transporting such precious cargo.
TortieMama : Don't forget that all those "adults" in Prisons and Jails started out as "precious cargo"....They ain't so "precious" now.... #msg2179878

As it stands right now, if the bus driver slams the brakes on they fly into the seat in front of them. If the vehicle flips, how many kids are going to be dead without seat belts? Many years back a bus flipped carrying a soccer team and killed many students and injured many others because they were flown around the bus.

As much money as the district wastes they could just reallocate funds to cover this cost. Some districts charge for bus transportation, I don't think that's a bad idea.
