@Smokeybear : I feel sorry for you . I just can't take the heat . I always feel so sorry for the men replacing roofs & building roads in the heat .

We had a crew out last year to fill our attic with the Owen Corning blow in insulation and the relief was huge. Very affordable

You won't believe what wasn't working at work today.... That's right the A/C. This is just crazy. Don't let me near your house or car, I'm jinxed.......

@Smokeybear : Nah, it's just a cursed year. We put in a brand new 4-ton unit last year and went through a repair a month ago. Glad you got her fixed 👍

Well we have 3 separate AC units in this house .1 for down stairs 1 for up stairs & 1 the split unit in our office . So unless all electrical is out we can loose a unit & function just fine .

My capacitor was replaced a couple of months ago. But for the past 2 plus weeks, the thermostat occasionally registers 2 degrees more than what we have it set on. On July 4th, the temperature continued to climb, although blowing cool air.
We turned it off for a couple of hours and once it was turned back on, it worked fine; until the last 2 days. Although set @ 72 degrees at bedtime, it's only at 74 when we get up in the morning, and I think it runs all night.
Anyone know what would cause that?

@redneckroy : I was just reading these and saw "Mike Beaudroux"
Name in your post. We had Mike for years as our AC go-to guy. Recently moved back here and last week had a AC problem. Couldn't find a number for Mike, so I called another Co. I would have much rather have Mike. Is he still around? I won't mention the name of the company I used, they did a good job but I believe it was very overpriced.

That's one of the perks of being married to an A/C guy... never have to worry about being hot!! Hope everyone stays cool the next few days.

My ac is struggling. I've been keeping it at 78 with all fans on. That time is coming and I'm dreading the cost

@Blackhorse77 :

You may be able to have it replaced in sections...That's what I did a few years ago....My AC was getting old but the compressor was still good...After one of the electric heating elements failed I had a new "Air Handler" installed, but kept the outside compressor....Then after about 3 years, I noticed the freon was very low, so the compressor must be leaking somewhere...Decided it was time to replace it instead of spend any money on constant freon refills....So, I got 3 extra years of life on the compressor...And instead of paying one large sum of money on a new unit, I paid half then and half 3 years later...

BTW, I'd never advise only replacing the compressor when you have an old(most likely dirty) Air Handler....

@EddyFree : I may have to do that. The unit itself is 15 years old. We've replaced the capacitor and had to add Freon. I'm just worried this heat will do it in

@Blackhorse77 :

An "honest" AC repairman will be able to tell you if you can split it up or not...And they should be able/willing to give your compressor an evaluation as far as what shape it's in and perhaps how much longer it will probably last...

If you decide to ride it out then the next time you have freon added is a good time to ask these questions. Tell them your unit is getting old and you're THINKING about replacement in the next year or two....You'll get better quotes then as they know you have time to shop competitors....If you wait until the unit fails, you're desperate and they know it, thus you lose your bargaining power...Also, if possible it's best to have the AC repaired during the "cooler" months, especially "Air Handlers" inside attics...You'll get a better deal and better quality work...Nobody likes working in a scorching hot attic and will surely rush the job...You want them to take their time and "do it right"....
