@nikkiole :

I speak English and Spanish as a first language. I'm fluent in Portuguese and I can function in French and German, enough to order food and find my way around.

Me and my wife speak Spanish all the time. She speaks to our daughters in Spanish but they reply in English. I speak to them in Spanish less than half the time.

Cubans speak like they have a hot potato in their mouths. Old Cubans always start a sentence with "Antes de Fidel..." or "before Fidel..."

2 of my neighbors growing up were Cubans that lost their business to the communists... so I would hear that all the time.

For me French is the hardest. It's like you have to get drunk to speak it. For Portuguese you have to use some muscles you don't even know you have in order to get the accent right. It's a very nasal language and that was hard for me too.

The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. Watch videos, listen to music, read the papers, seek someone to practice with.

There are some French classes at Rice.

Why would you learn French? In my case it was kind of a necessity because I was traveling to Belgium and France for business a few years ago. Otherwise I wouldn't had put in the time... I wasn't very motivated.

El General is now a Jehova's Witness and quit the business. Such a shame, but hey if he's happy, I'm happy for him.
