@ladybeachbum : OMG! That's awful!!! I am so sorry to hear about this. I can certainly understand feeling the way you do. What a terrible ordeal! Sounds like your niece and her daughter lived to tell the tale …. THANK GOODNESS! But I am terribly sorry about their other dog …. that's terrible! *** Your Golden sounds like he was jealous and extremely protective. My pit mix, Lucky, was part Black Lab. He had the typical lab "webbed" feet and he loved the water. He was protective when there were strangers, but we never had any behavior problems out of him. I cried for a week when Lucky passed away. About a couple of weeks later, we headed to BARC to give another rescue dog a home. Currently we have a mix that has smooth-haired chow in him … found him at BARC. We have had to do some behavior modification and socialization with him. He is extremely protective of me and my husband (but especially of me). He is not a children's dog. We would not have gotten him if we had small children. When the people brought him out for us to see, a man who was a part of a young couple, expressed his interest in the puppy. (He was the only smooth hair chow mix that we noticed at the time. A smooth-hair chow is not a dog for a beginner). My husband stated (lol) to the young man who was interested that he planned to take this particular one home, but that there were a lot of other puppies available. It makes me think of all the people who pick a dog just on looks alone, not taking in consideration the temperament of the puppy and/or the breed or breeds (if mixed). Even with that in mind, there are personalities that come into play and nothing is a sure thing. Since my husband and I are basically retired, we have a lot of time to spend with our dog. He gets a lot of attention. And, yes, I guess you could say that this dog of ours is definitely spoiled (lol).
