@tori6749 then it sounds like she is good with not playing school ball. If she decides to ever get serious about it and you have questions just pm me.

@Fiona Thanks! I will do. She really is pretty laid back and not super competitive and wanted to play at school for fun. She hasn't really been playing too long (just a couple years) and hadn't even started overhand serving yet. She is really not used to having to compete to make a team or whatever. She has been in a basketball program at our church for several years. She has been taking dance lessons for 9 years. If she wants to do a duet or solo for recital she can and does. So I think these volleyball tryouts were more of a shock to her than she was expecting. I will definitely contact you if she is interested in pursuing this. Emoticon

If you sign up for Athletics you have to try out for all the sports whether you want to play that one or not.

@tori6749 :

Is that true at AMS? All of the other middle schools in HumbleISD don't have that rule AFAIK...most of the girls we know usually only try out for one sport, sometimes 2 and a handful for all 3. In fact, I know MANY in athletics who don't try out for anything...they just prefer athletics (off-season training) to traditional PE (I would, too! Emoticon ). I personally know several girls at AMS who only try out for volleyball and/or basketball.

@brightlights This is what my daughter came home and said last Monday. One of her friends didn't want to tryout for volleyball and had to and then ended up making the team. She also said that everybody is in Track, there is no tryouts for that. The email they sent stating they had 85 tryout for volleyball is because that is how many are in the class. I think they should have a choice but they don't. Now they don't have to be in Athletics to tryout for the team or practice since practice is before school for 7th and after school for 8th grades. I don't agree with how they do things but I am still learning as I go along. She is our oldest so I guess we know more now then for the next one.

Oh, and sorry your DD didn't make it this year, but it sounds like she's okay with that (I like that attitude!)...there's always next year if she develops a stronger love for the sport!

I agree with Fiona...if she does decide she wants to go for it again, take advantage of the MANY camps/clinics in the area middle and high schools and colleges in the summertime...they're so much fun! Also, check out the clubs in the area (Texas Thunder, Texas Outlaws, Texas Tornado, Kingwood Revolution, etc.)...if you don't want to commit to club, they all have great, relatively inexpensive camps and clinics here and there (mostly summer). Lastly, the Lake Houston Y is a good starting point and pretty inexpensive...I believe they're still enrolling for fall volleyball (don't quote me on that! It's been a while 😀) this year?

Good luck to your DD on whatever she decides! Volleyball is such a great, team-building and rewarding sport, but pretty cutthroat around here, so it takes some investment. Emoticon

That's VERY different from the other MSs! My own DD has 3 good friends in athletics with her who have no interest in the 3 sports tryouts, but want to be in athletics. She also has 3 friends at AMS who are in athletics, but play volleyball only (didn't try out for basketball or track).

Crazy how different the policies run from one school to the next in the same district if that's true for AMS!

That is true. If the boys want to tryout for basketball they have to tryout for football.

At AMS, the 7th graders in Girls Athletics have to try out for all 3 (VB, BB & Track). 8th graders in Athletics don't have to try out for all 3.

So yesterday she got home and I think it is bothering her more than she says that she didn't make the team. Especially when a friend of hers made it who hasn't played volleyball before. But I think she is ok. It is a life lesson. She missed school and the last day of tryouts Monday because she was sick on Sunday with a high fever. I emailed one of the coaches Sunday evening and let her know that she wouldn't be there because she was sick. She will be fine. She is tough and she needs to learn she isn't going to get everything she tries out for. Still hard to see her disappointed.
