@Sammee
What are your concerns with not having a landline?

Simply not having a phone at home. The kid needs to know exactly where phones are located in an emergency, not have to wonder where the last place she left it was. I also don't want to have to scramble trying to find my phone everytime I want to make a call. I don't carry my cell around with me 24/7.....I'm old....lol.

@BusyMommy

To add to @sammee. We still have our land line (technically IP phone from comcast) for 911 purposes. Cell phones aren't always the best when calling 911 if you can't communicate your location. John Oliver just did a good report on it. I didn't know it was that bad.

@daddyo9 But you can call the police, fire, or ambulance with your alarm system.

@BusyMommy Not with my alarm system. I just have the basic breaking and entering system and to cheap to upgrade. Anyway with the cable and internet package I have the phone line is free so not saving any money cutting it off.

My daughters are 12 and 10 and neither of them have a cell phone and they both walk to and from school. We have a landline which was free with our cable and internet. That is the phone they use to call their friends. So far we have not seen an actual need for them to have cell phones yet. Yes there have been a couple of times we have said it would have been nice but nothing to actually warrant a need. I work from home and am home when they leave for school and get home from school except for a very few times. They go straight to school and straight home. I know what time they should be walking in the door. I pick them up if it is raining and sometimes pick my older one up when she is on her way home if we have an early activity after school. The only place I just drop them off for activities is at church. They are good about calling me from school to let me know of any changes in our plans (need to stay for tutoring or whatever). The couple of times I have not been home when they have gotten home they know to call me from the landline. Also, when they walk to and from school they do not walk alone. They meet up with friends on the way. We discuss safety at least twice a week.

We ditched our landline when we realized the only people who called on it were people we didn't want to call us, LOL.

I give home landlines another 5 years before they are gone from 99% of homes.

I can't even remember the last time I called someone's personal landline!

Mine is almost 13 - no phone, yet. I might get him one for his birthday or when he starts 8th grade.

My son is 11, he's getting an old one this summer. I wanted to wait but his Dad wanted him to have one and is willing to pay for it so I went along with it. No social media will be allowed though.

could you imagine if you only had a landline you would be forced to remember people's phone numbers

@ginx
You're so right. I used to keep hundreds of phone numbers in my head, now I don't know any anymore, just names in a digital rolodex.

Mine all got one at 10 when they were starting to be away from us more often (sports, sleepovers, solo trips to the grandparents, hanging out with friends, etc.). We didn't really plan the "10" thing...it just sort of organically happened that way with each one.

@brightlights
I want my kid to have direct access to me when she is at a sleepover, too.

@BusyMommy Right...no way would I have felt comfortable with ours at sleepovers unless it was with a family we knew VERY well. At around 10, those sleepovers seem to be every other weekend and the "VERY well" thing starts getting fewer and further between. Emoticon
