I think that is the beginning of the problem- we treat 19 year olds as children, when in fact not too many generations ago, they would have been fully functioning adults!

@BusyMommy :

Look at pictures of the 18 & 19 yr old BOYS in WW2 . I would hardly call them fully functioning adults . They left little farms like my father did & had no life experiences except working on the farm & attending school . Today we have 12 & 13 yr old boys having sex which of course doesn't make them adults & girls also . Not to say there weren't some having sex but nothing like today . With Tv ,Computers & Interstate Hwys young people are much more worldly today I feel .

@bbk Farms where they were up before the sun and providing food/income to support themselves and their families?

@BusyMommy :
No, as a member of a family everyone was responsible for doing something . In my fathers family him & his older brother milked the cows before breakfast & the girls got the eggs & helped with breakfast preparation . Just like I got up & made my bed & helped get the younger kids dressed & ready for school & make their beds while my mother got breakfast made . We weren't mature we were being taught to become a responsible person . Each person according to age had duties to perform . My fathers parents didn't expect him( to provide) for the family they expected him as part of a big family to get his chores done . Same as my parents expected of me & I expected of my kids .That has nothing to do with maturity . It has to do with get your chores done or get grounded or a spanking .

Lucky him. By 18 all of my grandparents were working and fully supporting themselves and in two cases contributing to the costs of their younger siblings. That was expected even of the girls. They didn't have a choice.

That has nothing to do with maturity

@bbk :

I disagree. That has everything to do with maturity and becoming independent responsible adults. We were taught it was the right thing to do.

@inkpad321 :
Definition of responsible---Answerable or accountable as for something WITHIN ONE'S POWER OR CONTROL. Def of MATURE ---Fully developed in body & mind as a person . From The Random House College Dictionary . Now do you think the child who had the responsibility of getting the newspaper out of the yard & bringing it in for my parents was MATURE or was being or becoming a responsible person . That member was not quite 4 yrs old & she had responsibilities that were age appropriate & that does not equate to being mature . How would you teach a 2 yr old to be a responsible person ? Would you hand them a check book & say pay the bills ??? No you would start with teaching them to take care of their-self & their things . Example I'm going to help you pick up YOUR toys . You teach them to dress their-selves .
I watch many young mothers today that I don't think have any idea how to teach their children to be responsible .I see kids in the store acting up & a mother who is a nervous wreck not knowing what to do .

@bbk What are you arguing? I say 18 year olds used to be fully functioning adults and you say NO they weren't and use your grandfather as an example of someone who was not. Then you say he was in the military at that age. So someone in the military is not a fully functioning adult? That is your argument?
