Mine would fall asleep easier if I made sure their tummys were definitely full! also had white noise in the room. My little one to this day (5) if she doesn't get enough sleep she will have a melt down in the evening! I can still lay down w her and pat her back to take a nap in the cool dark room!

Have you tried swaddling the baby? I read that this is a great technique for calming them down at sleep time. In the womb, they are used to having a lot of close, tight contact. Maybe the baby has the feeling that he is being abandoned if you just lay him down on a bed.

@niceguy :

7 months may be a little too old for swaddling. Most are mobile/crawling by then and would have none of that mess! Emoticon

...how 'bout teething?
We used to rub whiskey on the gums.
I guess that would be a case for Child Welfare if we did that today huh?

It's probably teething that's making him fussy. I would say being a child that isn't yours letting him cry it out isn't the best idea. Things can happen to baby's when they cry too much. They can vomit and have seizures also. i personally wouldn't let him cry. There has to be a reason. Sometimes it's reflux when they lay down also. Bless his heart I hope he gets through it soon

It's such a wonderful time when they are that age. They want to snuggle and love on you. Then they grow up and start talking back and have their own personality.......😛😈 lol

@brightlights :
Good grief I was thinking 1 or 2 mos old baby . This kid understands everything anyone is saying . Pull a chair up by his baby bed & tell him your going to read him 2 books & then he has to go to sleep . Show him the colorful pictures in the book as you read to him . Some one has to be the adult . Bad behavior should not be rewarded because it continues . They learn real fast who is calling the shots . Crying a little isn't going to hurt this kid . I'd tell the mother what you'd like to try & get her ok . I'm sure she is tired of this child fighting sleep also . And if he doesn't want to spend his time in bed sleeping that is his choice . Or tell her to please ask the baby's doctor if this is a suitable idea . The doctor will most likely say put the kid in the bed & let him/ her learn how to go to sleep on their own .

Assuming there is not a medical condition or teething pain going on, babies should be capable of falling asleep on their own by 7-months. However, they are also old enough have sleep patterns in place. If they are used to being held and rocked to sleep everytime they need to sleep, they don't know how to put themselves to sleep. This will be what every caregiver of this child will have to do until it's old enough to not need it, unless the parents teach him to be a self-sufficient sleeper. I'm not saying cuddles and snuggles are bad at sleep time; do all the cuddling, snuggling and loving, but let Baby fall asleep in the crib. I know this does nothing to help the OP's problem, since she's not the momma.

At 7 months? I wouldn't go that far. When one of mine at 8 months old was throwing a fit one night for example, she didn't seem to get the gravity of the situation at hand when I yelled, "The COWBOYS ARE PLAYING THE EAGLES!!" at her. Emoticon
