@Catmae : I have found some interesting things in my kitchen lately. I usually go back to which hurricane did I buy these for or bring them from the beach. I need to get back to cooking but it has been so long I will have to relearn all I did.

Twinkies actually DO go bad .... Found an unopened box of Twinkies way back in a cabinet. Probably expired around 2014. (I think that's around the last time I looked in the back of that cabinet, because it's really high above the fridge. They are rock hard and one must have had a small hole in the cellophane, because it's not recognizable. Hostess Best Buy Codes are hard to read also. Found a thread online with a lot of code bashing.

@Catmae : FYI Hostess was sold around 2012.

@chasinghosts : That's correct. They were bought, but kept the Hostess Brand name on Twinkies and Ding-Dong's. Maybe more, but I'm not sure. These were purchased after they came back on the market.

@eksda : Yeah. I hate it when I'm at the store and I'm just sure out of something -- let's say ketchup -- only to return home to realize that I already have 5 bottles. That said, I try to keep things current. I'll consume something a few months past expiration if it looks & smells okay but after that -- into the trash.

@eksda : I had to look this one up. So, flavor-wise, what is the difference between Japanese mayo and Miracle Whip? Also, what does your son use it on, or in?

Catmae : Are they not supposed to go bad...ever?

@Amanda79 : Yeah, it's just kind of been an urban legend of sorts. Here are excerpts from a couple of different articles:

Urban legend has long deemed Twinkies the cockroaches of the snack food world, a treat that can survive for decades, what humanity would have left to eat come the apocalypse. The true shelf life - which used to be 26 days - seems somewhat less impressive by comparison.

A common urban legend claims that Twinkies have an infinite shelf life, and can last unspoiled for a relatively long time of ten, fifty, or one hundred years due to the chemicals used in their production. The 2012 Super Bowl Chevy Silverado Apocalypse commercial also gives a nod to the Twinkie's reputed durability.
