President Trump signs executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said Thursday he is renaming Lake Ontario to be known as Lake America in the United States as he exacerbates his trade war with Canada.

Trump said Tuesday, Aug. 25 in a post on Truth Social that he was considering the name change.

The president signed an executive order that updated the lake's name for the U.S. geographic naming service on Thursday. Trump cannot force Canada to follow his preferred naming convention, however.

The move is reminiscent of his move in 2025 to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

Trump, who signed the order as he was sitting at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, had a large sign behind him propped on a stand with a map of the Great Lakes. Over Lake Ontario, in big red letters, the map read "Lake America."

The president told reporters that Canada is "the worst" to deal with on trade.

"They feel entitled and we can't have that," Trump said.

The president has been floating the idea of the name change in recent days as the U.S. announced it was imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods over the weekend after talks between the countries broke down. Trump has been needling America's northern neighbor since he returned to the White House in 2025, suggesting the ally with whom the U.S. once had warm relations should instead be absorbed as the 51st state.

The U.S. and Canada share borders along multiple Great Lakes, including Lake Ontario.

The official U.S.-Canada border stretches across the water between Lake Ontario's northern and southern shores. The body of water forms much of New York State's coastline and separates Buffalo from Toronto, the capital of the province of Ontario. Toronto is Canada's most populous city and Ontario its most populous province.

Ontario is also the single largest export destination for more than a dozen U.S. states.

The International Hydrographic Organization - of which both the United States and Canada are members - works to ensure that the world's seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted uniformly, and also names some of them. But there is no single international body that determines names of international bodies of water.

Can Trump rename Lake Ontario?

Much like the change in 2025 with the Gulf of Mexico, the new name would only apply to federal publications and communications and generally isn't recognized by other countries.

Trump cannot unilaterally rename Lake Ontario as a whole, especially because it is a body of water shared with Canada.

How did Lake Ontario get its name?

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes when measured by surface area, according to Michigan State University.

The origins of its name are contested, with some scholars saying Lake Ontario comes from the Huron Tribe world meaning "lake of shining water," while others say it comes from the Iroquois word meaning "beautiful lake."

It was previously named Lake St. Louis by Explorer Champlain.

There are so many issues in our country right now. Why is this even taking up a minute of the presidents time or thoughts?

I think everyone should have had a fit when it was changed from Lake St. Louis to Lake Ontario. Where were you people then? O, not born? Then where were your grandparents? How could they have let that happen? The thing is that seems nothing is set in stone and why not Lake America, sounds good to me.

@Catmae : Therein lies the problem with tit-for-tat politics.

What does 9/11 have to do with Canada anyway? Who cares! I'm over 9/11 myself. This Country has fallen so far away from 9/12/2001. We are not united at all.

Also, while I'm on the subject, everyone can miss me with the annual "Where were you?" post. Where are you NOW is what I'd like to know. Divided AF... that's where.

Picking a fight with Canada makes absolutely no sense. They and the UK have been our closest allies.

NO former president would have made these type of moves. But there are those that have convinced themselves that 47 is smarter than all of them.

Like he possesses some mystical power. All I can say is, once he's out of power, it's going to take a long time for the US to regain the world's trust. Assuming it ever does.

@Catmae : Did I? Last I checked Countries were not required to honor another Country. Most do it to be courteous, but it's not a diplomatic requirement. Thanks for showing your entitled side, though. Canada doesn't owe us a thing, so I couldn't care less if they honored us or not.
