As long as the training is specialized and geared towards protecting students I am all for it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I kind of like how it is now. Certain Staff/Administrators carry on every campus in the district, but it is concealed and unknown who they are.I hope they keep this same standard. I don't think all employees should be allowed, because some aren't even emotionally capable of caring for the students in their class. I think it should remain a select few, or select chosen.I do know who one of the people is on our campus, because one of the boys saw the gun in their hand during one of the drills. So, I wasn't sure how to handle that info. I just said you aren't supposed to be looking around during those events, you're supposed to play dead. I told him not to tell other students about it. Then I let him know that some of the staff carry guns to protect the children from harm. Because what I don't know is, where are these guns stored during the school day; and how accessible are they to curious students?

Parents protest Humble ISD adopting program that allows employees to carry guns"We are not prepared operationally, ethically, financially, emotionally, for this kind of program."Some Humble ISD parents are voicing concern over the school board's recent decision to approve the launch of a program that allows district employees to bring guns into schools. Last week, board members voted 6-1 to join Texas' School Marshal Program-a state-approved program that allows employees with a license to carry a firearm access to a gun on campus. The program, implemented by law in 2013, is meant to "prevent the act of murder or serious bodily injury on school premises," according to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement's (TCOLE) website. TCOLE oversees the program, which the Texas Legislature approved after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Those who participate in hopes of becoming a school marshal must participate in 80 hours of training and undergo a psychological exam. Chron contacted Humble ISD for further comment on the decision and its implementation, but did not receive a response by publication. Humble ISD Vice President Michael Grabowski said at last week's board meeting that Humble ISD adopted the program with additional certification requirements, including a final certification from Humble ISD Police Chief Solomon Cook.
Certification by the district official will be required for recertification every 3 to 6 months. Eventually, Grabowski added, the training will be conducted in Humble by Cook. He also confirmed that district officials were "imposing this on no one," and it is completely "voluntary" to be a marshal. Nearly a dozen parents spoke out at the board meeting, with one saying the district is not equipped to handle participation in the program, which will be launched as a pilot initiative. "We are not prepared operationally, ethically, financially, emotionally, for this kind of program," Larissa Powell told the board during public comment.Grabowski confirmed that TCOLE will cover the "bulk" of the program's costs. The Texas Legislature doles out about $600,000 per year to support the program, but travel to training is an out-of-pocket expense for participants. The district is expected to roll out the program over the next 10 to 12 months and become the eighth school system in Texas to adopt it this year. TCOLE reported that a mixture of full-time school marshals, teachers, and staff school marshals are participants. A spokesperson for Humble ISD said only district employees will be considered for school marshal responsibilities. Only 156 schools or districts have implemented the program since its establishment, with 109 currently actively participating, out of the over 1,200 school districts in the state. 
Roughly 1,000 school employees across Texas have completed the program, but only a little over half-654-have active certifications. TCOLE attributed the number to those previously holding certifications having either retired or left the education system. Only one license through the program has been suspended due to that participating individual's loss of their license to carry a handgun from the Texas Department of Public Safety. www.chron.com/politi cs/article/humble-is d-guns-teachers-2120 1012.php
