ParksideRes :
Canada is a constitutional monarchy... the USA is a federal presidential republic. You can spin it anyway you want, but the fact remains: Canada has a King and the USA does not.

So, you can put an asterisk next to the word "king" all you want, but it's pretty damn clear, in both English and French, that Charles III is the King of Canada.

And you're helping prove a point by focusing on the semantics instead of the actual issues.

Thanks.

Dude, what point did I prove exactly? That Canada has a king? That's not semantics, that's civics. And dismissing a fact because you don't like it doesn't make you right. It just makes you stubborn.

Nohing new here... you seem more interested in winning arguments than having an honest discussion. I'll leave it at that.

#msg2210558Dude, what point did I prove exactly?

sandman : That instead of addressing the actual issue, you ran off to a side topic to avoid it.

You might wanna go back and actually read my original post. I shared an experience about a Canadian friend encouraging her American friends to participate in the "No Kings" protests. I simply asked her about her own king.

That's not avoiding an issue. That's sharing an anecdote. You're the one who decided I was making an argument I never made, and now you're accusing me of avoiding it Emoticon Hilarious!

Your problem is that you're so convinced you're always right that you can't seem to comprehend what someone is actually saying. You interpret everything through the lens of what you think they mean, rather than what they actually wrote.

This isn't anything new. You've been demonstrating that tendency on ADC for years.

You can't win an argument against a position someone never took. But you certainly seem determined to try.

Have a good one.

#msg2210493Nobody considers him a wanna be king, more of an authoritarian

redneckroy :
Oh absolutely. He clearly, clearly, desires to be an authoritarian. And he envies strong men like Putin that have that power. He has done everything he can to weaken the other two branches of government in pursuit of that goal.

Which leads to the second point. Congress and the Supreme Court have been utterly complicit in this effort. I never thought I'd see in my lifetime our government completely lay down at the will of one man. Supposedly the "checks and balances" written into the Constitution was designed to prevent this very thing from happening.

That said, the only thing left that will save our republic is a Democratically controlled House. And preferably the Senate. Not simply because of party ideology. But because if Republicans remain in charge of Congress, they will cede what little power they have left to 47. After which they'll be no more guardrails at all. And the takeover of government will be complete.

Now, 47 is very, very aware of this. So expect cries of fraud and other criminality in regard to the midterms should things go against him. He's been laying the groundwork since 2020. It would absolutely not surprise me if he ordered that voting machines be confiscated so that they can be "thoroughly examined" for potential manipulation.

This has the potential of being a wild ride. So buckle up.

#msg2210463The Left isn't protesting a king but their fellow Americans. They aren't standing up for democracy - they are protesting against it. They seem to have forgotten that Donald Trump was democratically elected with a popular majority. The 'No Kings' rallies are mostly a protest against a man who sought power three times through democratic elections and enacted his major agenda item by majority vote of democratically elected members of Congress. Some King. It's difficult to think of a more effective way to illustrate the moral and intellectual emptiness of the American left than to have them march around demanding an end to an institution our founding fathers abolished 250 years ago.

Andi7 : Amen to that.

Most on the left also assume that those on the historical right "worship" every Republican president that comes along. That's uncategorically untrue. But we manage to mimic what the generation preceding us did and respect the office of the presidency. Even with Jackson,, LBJ, Carter, and Clinton.

Terms such as referring to our president as "47" in lieu of his actual name, or "the orange man," or "the ****** in office," or the "I hope he goes to prison!," or "other countries see the American people as a laughing stock," or that it's our "fault that we're stuck with this idiot," and even "TDS."

Those words, those finger-pointings, those threats to lives, are highly caustic and insulting. disrespectful.

That right there is some bullschnit.

Look, I like you alright as a person, but sandman is correct in that you refuse to even contemplate considering any view that opposes your own without firing back before the paint's even dry.

It renders you uncreditable to others. Rest assured that you're not the only one on ADC. They know who they are.

You've exhibited this by virtue of posting on this thread in more rebuttal multiple times.

brightlights :
First of all, 47 enjoys referring to HIMSELF as 47. Secondly, derogatory references to a president is nothing new in American history. I would argue Obama was called much, much, worse. Third, this is the first president that came into office as a convicted felon. So, he's unique in that instance.

In regard to a perceive lack of so-called respect toward him, it could merely reflect the fact that he has exhibited very little respect to others. Everything from calling reporters stupid and piggy. To referring to his political challengers with elementary school nicknames.

At the end of the day, with all things considered, 47 brings much of the heat upon himself. He's not a good leader. He doesn't inspire most people. There's nothing about him that many parents would want their child to emulate. There's no wise sayings of his that will one day be etched on an important building either here, or around the world.

When he leaves office. He'll just be gone.

#msg2210612That's not avoiding an issue. That's sharing an anecdote.

sandman : Yes. That is avoiding the issue as it doesn't actually bring anything to the discussion 🤣

As an aside, it's fine but you've still not brought anything.

#msg2210617correct in that you refuse to even contemplate considering any view that opposes your own without firing back before the paint's even dry.

brightlights : Lol. Maybe read the actual argument brought to the table. I bring support with the other viewpoint.

But here's the issue, when I rebutt with that viewpoint: most cannot back themselves up. At all. It's just personal attacks, like I'm replying to. That's all anyone has to do, back yourself up. You shouldn't run away when confronted with facts to the contrary.
