NYC officials' 18% salary hike gets support of fiscal watchdogs - but also a warning

Retroactive to January 1, 2026. The mayor's salary would rise from $258,750 to $305,800

That's too much money, especially if the mayor gets a public house to live in for free and free transportation for official business. 100k would be a fair salary for an expensive city like New York.

If the governmental apparatus of New York approves this, why should this be of concern to us in Texas? We have no dog in the fight whatsoever.

@Anurania : What I object to is ...he would be giving himself a raise after only 6 months on the job which would actually be retroactive to January 1st! Getting a raise on the first day?

@rocket1 : Because....democratic socialism is on the increase in the US and Texas is no exception. This bill would allow Mamdani to have a raise on day 1 of being on the job since the bill is retroactive to January 1st which is when he took office. He gets a raise the first day on the job?

@TortieMama :
As I review it, it just wouldn't be for him. Secondly, understanding the true definition of Socialism, I think we're more under threat of becoming an authoritarian society as opposed to a socialist one.

Both Mamdani and the speaker of the NY city council have announced they will not accept the raise if approved.

@MrsT :
In general, there's just a maga obsession with this guy. While at the same time, many of them are completely blind to the dictatorial moves coming from 47. He is stretching the law and Constitution in ways never done before.

To that end, I'm certain that if Biden and especially Obama had done any of this, these same people would be in the streets screaming to high heaven.

@rocket1 : I hear this but no one gives examples. You could give us some so we could read up and see what you think he is doing.

The below article explains some concerns in a nutshell. Since it was printed, the SC has ruled in his favor on some things, like firing the heads of independent agencies. Inexplicably I might add. Hence the term "independent". Yet, it lays out quite well what those of us outside the maga bubble are seeing.

@rocket1 : Yes of course it is not only him. Other city officials. Not a good look getting a raise when you have only served 6 months.

@MrsT : Hmmm. . . is this like Joe Biden saying he wouldn't pardon Hunter? Furthermore, he can say this however proof? Trump said he wouldn't accept a salary and there again..proof? Difference being Trump is a billionaire and $400K is pocket change.

@rocket1 : Mamdani is a Decomcratic socialist. He has promised NY'ers free child care , free bus rides, rent freezes. They are buying into and not undestanding that nothing is free. The taxpayers of NYC are the ones paying Mamdani's salary and now....he wants a pay raise retroactive from the first day he took office! SMH.

@TortieMama :
So, you're asserting that the people of New York are too stupid to understand "nothing is for free". I will agree with you that stupidity has spread like wildfire across the land. However, the good people of NY do not have a monopoly on the issue. Not to mention the fact, a large majority know exactly what they're doing, and they're all for Mamdani's ideas.

That said, I see nothing wrong with free childcare and bus rides. As for rent freezes, certain NY apartments have been under rent control for DECADES. As such, this idea didn't start with Mamdani. The key issue you're failing to appreciate is millions of Americans are metaphorically drowning in the current economic conditions.

People are having a hard time paying rent, mortgages, car notes, utility bills, health insurance, homeowners' insurance, rental insurance, etc. Essentially, everyday living has become more difficult as the years go by. Let's take health insurance. Millions are one illness away from their savings or retirement accounts being wiped out.

Which makes no sense when other advanced nations have a form of universal healthcare. As it is, the U.S. has the most expensive health system IN THE WORLD! That's crazy! Along with that, if most of us are blessed to live long enough, many of us will need some form of elder care. Elder care in this country is also damn near cost prohibitive.

Let's look at the other end of the spectrum - childcare. It's interesting that some of the same people who are against abortion, tend not to give a rat's *** about the child after its born. So, they agree with cuts to SNAP benefits, free lunch programs, access (once again) to medical care to include dentistry for said children.

To sum it up, the top percentile of the economic ladder is doing quite well. The middle is squeezed almost to the breaking point. While the lower end of the rung is being deprived of desperately needed social services. And I don't want to hear about fraud. Because in every social system ever developed, there will be a small percentage of those taking advantage.

Further, no one talks about the "massive fraud" schemes that happen at the top of the food chain via high class tax cheats, Wall Street brokers, offshore banks to hide assets, etc. Average people are looking for help! Between jobs being outsourced overseas so the rich can become richer. AI displacing workers. And the "American Dream" no longer obtainable for many (keeping in mind some were never part of the equation in the first place), it's little wonder Mamdani is playing a tune people are eager to hear.

Apparently, Mamdani scares you. Well, get in line because 47 continues to scare millions of us. So, I guess hence forth, we're all going to be frightened for one reason or other.

@rocket1 : Starting with .. I am pro choice. Free "anything" is not free. Health care took a downward turn with Obamacare. Mamdani just took it to another level. His office attempted to contact and Iranian UN ambassador. We are at war with Iran. This borders on treason. Thank God Trump put a stop to it. Socialism..is not the answer. If you are unhappy here..there are other places to live. You seem to enjoy socialized medicine and what not. Canada is an option.
