#msg2199619According to the school board, the administrattion, and the parents. little Johnny has never done anything bad in his life. It is your fault the little #%&%##% is not paying attention, is on his/her/its phone, and never turns in assignments. And you better not give him/her/it a zero for missing a test or an assignment. Last place I taught the lowest grade, for completely missing a test or homework, was a 70, because the administration did not want the little #^&*((*&^% to fail. And no, I no longer teach in the public school system and would not go back to it no matter how much it paid. A couple classes a year as an adjunct professor at a college, where most students want to learn, is enough to keep me in touch with the younger generation. I wish I could give you some words of encouragement, but so many of the high school and junior high school kids today are worthless because their parents are worthless. They do not control them at home, and do not believe they do any wrong at school.

Idk, but it was fun trying to fill in the blanks on your nicknames for little Johhny.

#msg2199716Private school if you can find an opening.

@cheryltom : That's what I was thinking. Public schools are in such a mess. It is sad. Both of my dd's are strongly considering private school even though they are in relatively good school districts. They feel that there is still too much nonsense going on. They don't want negative influences on their kids. Private isn't perfect but the environment in private schools is overall better than public. It is ridiculous that our kids have to pay taxes and then turn around and pay for private school because of the scenarios described above. And what in the world will become of our country?

@TwinA :
Very sorry that you are dealing with this. EAP might help some. Perhaps you can change districts. Or maybe focus on your transferable skill and change careers? Maybe do extreme tightwadding/expense cutting so that you can return to school for a career change. Bake your own bread and snacks can save money and relieve stress. I worked as a legal assistant for 10 years and was absolutely done. I started saving aggressively so that I could quit. Also, yoga helped me through that period a lot. Go for a bike ride or a walk in the neighborhood at the end of the day. It really can help.

Oh, and a walk in the woods can really help your immune system and stress levels. Maybe walk in Kingwood or Deussen Park. Pack a picnic, take a short walk and sit by Lake Houston people watching. Almost free therapy.

One last thing. Approach this situation as a 2 prong thing. One, stress reduction by employing coping skills. But that is only coping. It is isn't solving the problem. Two, talk with administration. If nothing is resolved and you have determined that you can't do this anymore, start brainstorming. Look at available jobs. Ask yourself how far you can commute, etc. Basically, employ stress reduction strategies and start plotting your escape. But know that there will be thorns in any situation. Best advice I was given is choose where you are going to rather than where you are leaving. Basically, emphasize improving your life rather than escaping the life that you have. Hope that makes sense and helps.

@TwinA :
If you could do it over again would you go into the field? Sorry, I'm nosey in advance. BTW I have heard of teachers parlaying the teaching career into a lesson plan side hustle or something like that, but not sure where that is with AI. @kram?

@ginx : That's actually a great question. I actually loved being an educator when I first started, but it's changed so much now. I'm now seriously considering leaving education. The last 5 years haven't been easy. I think this year just proves that things aren't getting any easier or better.

Concentrate on those desiring to learn. Hopefully, those others will pick up enough to skim by. Some may surprise you on how much they learn, even if current grades don't reflect that.
My grandson was in this group. Graduating in the lower percentage at Kpark. Drugs, skipping school, etc.
Started at Lone Star and finished Sumna Cum Laude in EE at UT.
CalTech for PhD and now with a top tech firm in research.
