@West-Tex :
This whole situation was weird. Are school districts so desperate that they hire any warm body willing to show up?

@CarolS: yes, currently there is a teacher shortage and they will hire a warm body when they are desperate to fill a position. Many school districts have a percentage of uncertified teachers.

@West-Tex : I think that if administrators and school boards started backing teachers they would have a whole lot more applicants. Seems like kids get to do what they want to do while teachers struggle to main some semblance of control.

@RajunCajun: many experienced teachers choose to retire when they are handed scripted programs to teach word for word. It is difficult to teach using poorly scripted material when you know how to better reach your students through your own teaching strategies you have developed over time.

It is also difficult when due to high teacher turnover, many/most teachers at a school are new, inexperienced and not yet capable of high quality teaching. If you are a third grade teacher, the second grade teacher may not have fully prepared all their students for third grade. Then you are teaching students in third grade that may be 1 -2 years behind grade level and barely reading. The problem multiplies each year as new teachers rarely have developed strategies that will enable students to gain two years of learning in one year.

In addition, some parents automaticly believe whatever their child relates about a teacher at school without keeping an open mind and fact checking. It is a darn good thing teachers don't believe everything a student tells them about their parent or home life.

@Rosey :
Reminds me of something my mother said about my kindergarten teacher. Mom said that the teacher told them, at open house, that she wanted to make a deal with the parents. She said she wouldn't believe 1/2 of what the kids told her about their home life so long as the parents didn't believe 1/2 of what the kids told their parents about what happened at school. She was an awesome teacher. I have fond memories of her.

@Rosey : She was the best. It was at a small, Episcopal school that only had two sections of each class. It seems that everyone had her for a teacher. I still remember a few of the lessons that she did. She loved science and did really cool science projects.
