Golf Wasn't Always Part of the Plan

Golf has become a much bigger part of my life than I ever imagined. I grew up on a farm in a small rural town outside Houston, where I knew more about cattle than golf. After college, I began my career in accounting at a large oil and gas company before moving into commercial and marketing. That’s when I started hearing the question, “Do you play golf?” Tired of being the person left behind while everyone else played in tournaments, I bought my first set of clubs and took lessons at 26.

Those lessons turned into girls’ days playing nine holes at a course we affectionately called “the goat ranch.” I wasn’t good, and that wasn’t the point. We laughed, fished golf balls out of ponds, fought over the fancy ones we found, and sometimes didn’t even keep score. For the next ten years, golf was mostly about being outside, spending time with friends, and having fun. A few years ago, I discovered 5050 Acorn, an old-school driving range near our house. It wasn’t fancy, but that was part of its charm. When it closed in 2025 to make way for development, we realized how difficult it was to find a place to practice. That’s when the idea of putting a golf simulator in our home turned into something bigger: surely we weren’t the only people looking for a place to play.

What started as a conversation quickly became a deep dive into simulator technology, business plans, construction, and everything involved in opening a brick-and-mortar business. A chance connection eventually led us to a commercial space in Atascocita and someone willing to believe in the vision. Today, Acorn Golf Club has three Full Swing simulator bays, a Laser Shot bay, sports games, a putting area, and a lounge. But Acorn is about more than golf. It’s about creating a place where people can practice, compete, learn, laugh, and spend time together. You don’t have to be a great golfer, know all the rules, or even have experience. We built Acorn because we wanted a place where you can come as you are, grab a club, bring your people, and have some fun.
