>> I can't sleep, my heart aches for our communities, our neighbors who tonight are living nightmares instead of getting their Halloween fun on. No matter if they are going trick or treating or staying in, my heart goes out to them.

It's been 25 plus years since I actually loaded and had to sleep with a shotgun close by.

I claim not to be so fast and sharp as I once was. My dh begs to differ.
He tried to wake a neighbor at 6:30am due to his fire alarm. Couldn't wake them. I was up, in my clothes and with 3 leaps across the yard and screaming do not break a window. backdraft. Had them up and out safe before 911 answered. My husband realized 30 minutes later I had made the bed too. I have no idea how or why.

@daisy girl:

What you said reminded me of my time when I was living in East Palo Alto, CA especially during the time that City was considered murder capital of world. I always had my shotgun close by when I was sleeping and would hear the noises of gun shots a few blocks away.

@cbp210:

Sharing with Dh this morning he's on a roll. He grew up in Monterrey and San Jose. Lol you outta hear him. Woke him up. Go honey go keep that fire and bring mama the monies.

@daisy girl:

I always loved to visit Monterrey beaches every chance I got. I used to work in San Jose for five straight years and nice town. I sometimes miss my old stomping grounds but I am very glad to come to this free State of Texas.

Your double-barrel ain't the best for home defense... too long to clear doorways, hallways and other tight spaces, plus you may want to have more than two shells ready to go.

I have a pump action shotgun for sale (look at classifieds | sporting goods) with an 18.5" barrel and some buckshot and slugs. Holds 4 shells in the mag tube + 1 chambered. Also included is a 28" barrel good for wingshooting... can double as a baton for self-defense as well.

All you need to keep intruders out while you wait for the cops to show up... good zombie gun for when SHTF!

@sandman:

Thanks I will look. What gauge. Ours is 12g with an 18 1/8th in barrel. But I'd need to brace myself. Dh wants to get me a 20g. I used to hunt with my 20 and it was a comfortable shoot.
I'm not as strong as I was 25 yrs ago. Looking for a nice hand gun has been rough. Can't **** it. Arthritic hands I guess. I'm really tiny and most grips are a little big.
What range / shop is the best place to go to try a few out and get comfortable? For a tiny woman, what do you recommend?
I trust ADCER'S in guiding me right.

In regards to perceived increased crime in the burbs and elsewhere, I just believe it's the times in which we live. For example, back in the day no one remembers a teenager going into a school and shooting their fellow classmates. However several of these incidents have happened in communities where people thought they were immune from such violence.

Another crime that is indicative of the times are the thieves whom access your bank account or other personally identifiable information through computers. Guns are useless against them. Then there are the fraudulent investment bankers that usually prey upon the middle to upper classes. Their crimes have also been much easier to perpetrate with the coming of the digital age. Both these type of criminals typically won't take your life but they sure as hell can ruin it.

So there is no safe haven. A criminal can utilize a window, investments, or smart phone. It happens whether you live in the burbs or not.

Boy you sure hit the nail. Technology has become our new enemy. More dangerous because they come from all countries.
Yesterday I tried to pay my life insurance like I have for 10 yrs. They got a new pay service and won't take my payment as usual. She immediately asked for my ss#. Um NO.
I have a client number.

I won't even tell people where I live anymore. I mean the general area is ok. If I invite you to my home, it means you mean a lot to me.

I have such cute bags but don't carry them. I don't need my key for my car, it just needs to be on me. So I tuck it deep along with my money. Hands free, eyes wide. And I walk around my car before I unlock it and get in. As I approach I look under it. Overkill maybe, but gotta be smart. I also do not park next to vans or over sized vehicles with tinted windows. Always under lights and I am not afraid to ask for an escort when I have a full basket.

@daisy girl:

The one I'm selling is a 12 with a 2 3/4 chamber. It's a Mossberg 500 field model (wood stock) that I bought the extra barrel (18.5).

I don't buy from local gun shops that much... lately I've been into building my own rifles, or restoring stuff that I get on trades. But for LGS, Sportsman's and Carter's are OK... I like Sportsman's range for pistol shooting better than Carter's because it's indoors... no need to wait for a cease fire to change your target.

There's a new gun store in Kingwood (Loop 494, opened a couple of weeks ago) and another store in Atascocita by Veron's and the Atascocita Barber Shop

A .380 with a smooth trigger may fit your needs...

Thank you. I will check them out.
While jogging at the college with the dog I have been getting friendly with campus security. They really like Hank lol. I often wonder if he would protect me because he likes everyone. They say absolutely, he knows we are not a threat. We jog 2 or 3 miles and it's nice to see them as the sun goes down get closer to the track. Sometimes dh can't go and it's hard to jog with a six foot stick.
