@Fairlane - I like the idea - just making fun of the timing and the delivery - going from greasing the wheels in the Texas political arena to searching out nationally popular ideas for upcoming run for the white house.

14 yrs earlier might have helped prevent some of the current problems. & 14 Mill/ probably a good return on that investment to be recognized by the state; but remember - the ones that make it across are granted in state tuition fees as per a law passed by Rick Perry

@redneck roy:

I certainly don't think Perry has been right on the immigration issue, historically (as most Rs and Ds have been wrong)....but this move is dead on a great move. Politics, or whatever...if its right then its right. Too bad this isn't action that the Federal Government initiated, that could carry more weight.

I like the idea even if political though I feel bad for the troops since they will probably have to live in tent cities not to mention they will have to put their careers on hold until they are released. But curious about their role. If I remember right from my brother's national guard days when he had to pull hurricane duty they don't have any legal rights to arrest anyone. They had to be paired with local law enforcement and was more their for physical back up. And I believe they are not armed. If you remember after 9/11 the national guard troops stationed at airports had their M16s but no magazines in them. Maybe they had some on them but not sure. @cbp210 could maybe share some insight on this.

@daddyo9:

Depends on location and commanders. The National guard guarding San Francisco bridge were armed with full ammo as well as the ones stationed at SFO. The guards stationed in the border do act as support and do accompany law enforcement. Under the POSSE COMITATUS national guards do not fall under this act but their authority is dependant on State laws pertaining to their arrest authority. I am not sure about Texas but when I worked in California Military LEO's, federal law enforcement were recognized in CA penal code 830.8 which allows them the powers similar to a peace officer. From what Iast read Texas has a statute known as Article 2.122 pertaining to Special Investigators which gives us the powers of arrest in this state for mainly felony crimes. I am not sure about the National guard arrest authority in texas.

If fired upon then of course shoot back. I thought the guard was being called out to assist the border with the children. From this pic and the boat looks like Perry is advocating to use force against them.

That looks like a .308/7.62 AR variant. Rick really shouldn't be holding it at the magazine well like that. I've read comments by plenty of operators that that type of grip could possibly push the magazine back slightly, messing up alignment and causing a jam or misfeed.

Sounds to me like Perry took Obama's statement to heart:

“The challenge is, is Congress prepared to act to put resources in place to get this done?” Obama said. “Another way of putting it is, are people more interested in politics than solving problems? If they are interested in solving the problem, this can be solved. If they prefer politics, the problem won’t get solved.”

He probably chewed on it for several days until his conscience got the better of him, the light went on(I know its not a very bright light, but still), and he actually did something other than complain!...Now, if only Congress had a "light"....Loading Image...
