Yes we ate well that week! And even some questionable items.

My craziest thing was trying to help a neighbor keep her stockpile of bags of frozen breast milk frozen.

We bought a generator the day Ike hit. We also had a window unit a/c. We all slept in the living room and put the window unit in there. We had 2 generators between 5 houses and had extension cords everywhere! It was fun times spending it outdoors with the neighbors.

I am 50/50 as well. Every summer I have a guy check out the generator to make sure it still works. If anything enters the gulf, I will stock up on water & food. Always have batteries. Husband made sure everything we have runs on AA batteries since Cs & Ds are the first batteries sold out. I also have solar powered camping lanterns. Those worked great during Ike. Put them out during the day & use them at night.

Don't forget to stock up for the fur kids too!

aww Ike memories...that was fun huh?...ice was precious...my work had a gas truck in our parking lot to fill up work trucks and personal vehicles and gave us bags of ice every night. Hubby was working in Louisiana on the levys and had some of his guys to bring in fresh supplies to us...they were our heroes that week.

>> We just get books and read when the power is out. We can deal with a couple of weeks of no AC.

We also refuse to leave. We are far enough North that we feel leaving from here is a danger of clogging the roadways for those South of us that actually need to get out of the way.

In terms of prepping... half and half. We will keep a few items on had at all times.
If a hurricane gets into the gulf we go and get a few more items asap. Then within a 3-6 more days once the projections start to clear up we make our final call on what else we may need to get.

Then we sit back and let nature do it's thing.

A couple of weeks without the ac? Oh! Heck no! That would be hard for me, maybe a couple of days I could handle it, but that is it. I especially can't stand for my melons to sweat. Emoticon Loading Image...

@West-tex:

Were you not here after Ike?

We made it just fine. Great neighbors/friends who all got together for parties every night and looked out for each other. It was almost sad when the power was restored! Emoticon Fun to see all the kids managing to have fun outside with each other without electronics. Lots of bonding time with neighbors that has carried through today.

The only big thing I'd recommend other than the obvious is a cheap, propane double burner. We had that and we ate well! Best potato salad ever. Emoticon Oh, and definitely a French press for coffee (water heated on the propane burner)!

Generators are nice. We'll just sponge off of our neighbors' again for phone charging next time lol

@brightlights:

No, we left. Went to the in laws. Pretty neat though hearing all these stories!
