I'm also ambivalent. It's not like we have a vote in the matter anyway.

I guess I would care more if it was my team. Or if I was American Indian. Well I actually do have AI ancestors but anyway...

I'm okay with whatever is decided, but it would be nice to stop hearing about it.

This "government intrusion" in issues like this has happened in the past long before the current crop of politicians came into office. For those with short memories or those that were too young at the time, in 1997 the Washington Bullets (DC) pro basketball team changed their name to the Washington Wizards due to pressure from both the government and the public. This was done due to the fact Washington DC was considered the murder capitol of the U.S. As a result some reasoned the nickname "Bullets" was tarnishing the image of the nations capitol and playing into stereotypes.

This sets a dangerous precendent...

So, if I don't like something that has been trademarked, all I need is to find 4 more buddies and go to the patent office to file a complaint... or does it help if I have friends in high places?

Other names that should be changed:

1. San Diego Padres. Obviously poking fun at Catholic priests... but may also be offensive to victims of abuse by Catholic priests

2. New York Yankees. We all know "yank" was a derogatory term used by Britons.

3. San Francisco Giants. What an insult to short people!

4. Texas Rangers. A name that instills fear, even today, amoung our "law-abiding challenged" community.

5. Houston Texans. With an abismal 2-14 season, it's really offensive to all residents of this great state.

So, I need 4 to join me... Who's with me?

@rocket:

Quite a different scenario when a team owner does it because of his own convictions due to a personal situation (it was not due to Government pressure)....Than to what Harry Reid, in his infinite wisdom in priority assessment, has said and brought actions against the Redskins...(I never thought I would say it...but Go Skins!)

@Fairlane67:

You know I'm not going to comment on most of the above post. Mostly because you, a Cowboys fan would actually utter the words go Redskins? Surely you can't be serious (tongue firmly in cheek).

I sir would sooner walk the plank than give the Redskins any credence whatsoever. Frankly I could care less whether they call themselves the Redskins, Dead Skins, or Pig Skins. That team from DC is our arch rival. Will they ever get support from me on anything? Emoticon

@rocket

I, a life-long Cowboy fan, am considering buying a Redskins jersey... Yes, never in my entire life I considered such drastic action, but i now see the 'skins logo in the same light as a chick-fil-a sandwich or any Phil Robertson / Duck Commander item. It's a symbol for tradition and American values, and against the collectivism that is ruining our nation.

The redskins attorney issued a response today... I'll find it and post it later...

Go 'skins!

I don't care much for this fight; but if an ethnic group or race tells me that a slang term to refer to them is offensive; how the hell as middle age white guy tell them they are wrong??? I don't care - but I won't use that term in casual conversation. To me - it shouldn't be a big deal - but if I were a life-time Redskins fan - and was hell-bent on saving that name - maybe I would feel differently.

Many terms have been phased out due to insulting people. personally - I think it is dumb to tell me I can't use the word retarded.

Anyone know the origin or reference from the Cleveland "browns"?
