Am I missing something? Where does it say the child shot himself with an AK-47?

I don't see it either.

>> It's difficult to get to your gun quickly when you are attacked in the middle of the night if it is in a safe.

@Undecided:

Guns used for self-defense need to be secured but quickly accessible... there are some devices designed to keep a gun reachable within seconds, but out of the hands of a child or unwanted users. For example, a drawer-sized safe, pistol pad (links to your alarm system), etc.

I don't know if this AK-47 was their home defense weapon, but In my opinion, that wouldn't be my first choice... If it's one with the fixed stock, it's not very versatile to use inside a home, plus the recoil may be too much for some users to handle. An AK-74 may be different, especially if fitted with a collapsible or movable stock.

For home defense, a handgun in 9mm or larger caliber, with a couple of extra magazines handy, or a defense style shotgun (short barrel, pistol grip, no buttstock), or an AR-15 with a collapsible stock and 16" or smaller barrel (careful there not to have a SBR without proper ATF stamps) would make a better choice than the AK. If the gun has rails to attach a flashlight, even better.

@sandman:

Good info.

I use a S&W 915 9mm as my go to weapon. My Winchester Super X pump 12 gauge and folding stock Mini-14 are in the master bath closet, which is where I tell my family to head to if someone has broken in. I just got a top rail, extended mag and lasersight/strobe/flashlight for the shotgun. It look pretty intimidating now. Emoticon

I prefer the shotgun for home defense due to the fact that hitting your target is easier, and the wall penetration is significantly decreased, thus reducing the risk of hitting anyone else in the house, or hitting your neighbors. Using .00 buckshot.

No, it doesn't say that... I guess I took Donnie's/Moon's bait and went off the AK-47 tangent...

That is funny as my brother is a big fan of the mini 14 and he put a lot of money into accessories for it. I am the black rifle man while my brother is the Ruger man and my dad is the Winchester Lever man.

Honestly, I wasn't into black rifles... they looked tactifool to me, and I didn't like the endless accessories and plastic parts... to me the best rifle was a bolt-action in 30 cal (i.e. .308 or 30-06) with a walnut stock... all metal and wood.

But now I wouldn't give up my ARs... they've been fun to shoot and fun to work on... and the platform is so versatile that we all can shoot them easily.

Growing up as a kid my family where into bolt action or lever action guns. My dad never bought anything else but lever guns with his motto what was good for the Wild West was good for him. I remembered buying my first AR when I turned 19 and I loved it. I took this rifle everywhere I moved especially East Palo Alto. When I got into LE positions I started getting into the tactical training with the AR's along with the MP-5, Tactical Mini 14, Rem 870. AR's have evolved so much that I now prefer them over the other rifles when I go hunting especially for hogs.

@cbp210 I can somewhat agree with the 556 but it was really just designed to take down a 130 - 150 pound target when it was designed. The AK on the other hand was designed to take down a 200+ pound target. Also most AK have few failure rates per 1k rounds as well. Now having said that I have both so it does not really matter to me as i will use them all.

@mw3538:

It is all about shot placement. I have used the 223 and 5.56 on hogs that weighed over 250 pounds with no problems and one shot. I have not had a failure with my SIg 556 yet and plus the rifle is based on the AK design making this brand a hybrid. Both are great guns but it comes to down to what I am in the mood for.
