@Undecided:
Guns used for self-defense need to be secured but quickly accessible... there are some devices designed to keep a gun reachable within seconds, but out of the hands of a child or unwanted users. For example, a drawer-sized safe, pistol pad (links to your alarm system), etc.
I don't know if this AK-47 was their home defense weapon, but In my opinion, that wouldn't be my first choice... If it's one with the fixed stock, it's not very versatile to use inside a home, plus the recoil may be too much for some users to handle. An AK-74 may be different, especially if fitted with a collapsible or movable stock.
For home defense, a handgun in 9mm or larger caliber, with a couple of extra magazines handy, or a defense style shotgun (short barrel, pistol grip, no buttstock), or an AR-15 with a collapsible stock and 16" or smaller barrel (careful there not to have a SBR without proper ATF stamps) would make a better choice than the AK. If the gun has rails to attach a flashlight, even better.
@sandman:
Good info.
I use a S&W 915 9mm as my go to weapon. My Winchester Super X pump 12 gauge and folding stock Mini-14 are in the master bath closet, which is where I tell my family to head to if someone has broken in. I just got a top rail, extended mag and lasersight/strobe/flashlight for the shotgun. It look pretty intimidating now.
I prefer the shotgun for home defense due to the fact that hitting your target is easier, and the wall penetration is significantly decreased, thus reducing the risk of hitting anyone else in the house, or hitting your neighbors. Using .00 buckshot.
