most thieves wiil scope out the home during daylight hours, thus know were everything is. I have motion sensors that will turn on lights and a bell or horn that will sound. They reset after a few minutes. The sound will deter any thief from staying around. Also I have an autodialer that will call my cell phone if motion is detected. Along with security cameras that I can view on the computer when notified. This set up has worked on a number of occasions for me. I have video of the thief sneaking around, and when the lights and horn come on, they run like scared rabbits.

That is what I liked about it, the horn and the autodialer.

My dad is a 25 year Sheriff's Deputy and according to him, most break-ins are at a no lights house. Criminals don't want to be ID'd in a lineup from witnesses. The suspicious person is always someone new. I'm nothing like George Zimmerman but there is a reason people wear hoodies at night and walk dark streets, to be unidentifiable. I drive through the neighborhood at 4 am after work, and see a hooded male standing in the dark spot of a yard, not exercising, looking around with a phone in hand, and it makes me wonder. Also, there are many lookouts that either walk or bicycle just after dark and then make a phone call to a friend down the street. I was raised to be aware of my surroundings and I either call the non emergency line or use the iwatch app for Harris County.
I am also energy conscious; but security lights are a necessity in my opinion.

cleaning your guns on the front porch works well also.

@redneck roy:

Actually, cleaning your guns on the front porch may show potential thieves who may be "casing your place" that you have valuable guns in the house...Stolen guns are always a good money maker on the black markets...As soon as you are gone during the DAY(work, etc.), boom guns go bye bye(along with who knows what else)...

Maybe it's just me but I'm the opposite...I think having lights on make a potential criminal's job much easier since they can see to do their "dirty work"...Without light, the criminal will have to either use a flashlight which is a BIG giveaway to anyone watching from afar, OR they will have to "feel their way" and become clumsy, bumbling, and noisy at what they are trying to do since they can't see well...That noise will probably alert me where I can introduce them to "my little friend"...Not to mention that *I* know my property/house much better than a stranger would, therefore I have the advantage in the dark...

@EddyFree: that's ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as don't wear your seatbelt so you can be thrown clear of the accident. You cannot be serious.

@GregButtle:

Yep, I'm serious...I know it may seem "out of the box", but it IS a controversial issue(light and crime)...
Although incomplete(IMO), here's a wikipedia article about it:
