The answer is, yes it sure can. Below, we look at how this can happen and what to do about it. We find that quite often homeowners do not take this into consideration. This issue is of great importance.

So, what exactly is mold?

Mold is a living fungi which can be found both on the interior and exterior of homes. Mold often grows in warm, damp and humid conditions, all of which we have here in the Houston Texas metro area, our climate provides a perfect environment for it to proliferate, spread and reproduce via mold spores.

How does it get under my siding?

There are several ways mold can get under your siding, such as butt-Joints, as water develops on your siding surface, it can find ways to get in. This can happen though cracks in the siding but-joints if they are not sealed correctly. Window Headers: as water cascades down from the roof, it is important that it is channeled away from any window headers with the use of flashing. Should the flashing not be attached correctly, water can seep underneath and enter behind the siding thus causing mold to grow. This is one of the most common issues Houston homeowners experience.

Other places mold might be found

Mold can be found in almost in any humid environment, both inside and outside of your home. This is especially true for our southeast Texas metro area in regards to exterior siding surfaces and under the siding as well.

Does mold affect the people inside of the home where mold is growing under the siding?

This is a great question. This depends on how much mold is growing under the siding and seeping into the home. This can vary in degrees.

Do I need to hire a professional to evaluate the home to check for mold growing under the siding or is this something I can check myself?

You can do a walk around inspection of the home yourself. As you walk around the home be sure to inspect the windows, siding as well as the roof where it is close to the siding checking for any mold growing on the surface or along the bottom edge of the siding panel. If you see mold at the bottom edge of the siding, there is a pretty good chance mold is growing underneath.

The exterior mold solution:

Professionals, like Texas Home Exteriors, can remove the old moldy siding plank, replace any bad and or rotted framing wood, treat affected areas with a mold killing solution and install new siding planks. Once installed, we will seal it with the appropriate sealant and then repaint it. This is the only true way to a permanent solution.
