A woman who was dubbed "mom of the year" for juggling carrying her baby and bringing food to her husband at a baseball game has spoken out regarding backlash tied to the viral clip.Ericka Alvarez can be seen in the video, posted by Barstool Sports on X, carrying the couple's baby daughter while simultaneously holding boxes of food for the pair at the San Francisco Giants' Sept. 22 game against the Minnesota Twins.Announcers Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper called Alvarez, 39, "mom of the year" and the "definition of a multitasking mother" during the broadcast, before poking fun at her husband, which sparked backlash online.
In a Substack post shared days later on Friday, Sept. 25, Alvarez addressed the controversy surrounding the viral clip. "Before you decide what our marriage looks like, I would like you to hear from the woman you're defending," she wrote."Ramses is an amazing husband and an even better father … A conversation the audience couldn't hear became the basis for millions of judgments about that life," Alvarez continued.She then explained that she and her husband "initially thought the broadcast was funny," but they changed their tune once "people on the internet treated the announcers' imaginary narration as evidence of our unequal relationship."Explaining what went down during the MLB game, Alvarez wrote, "Around the fifth inning, I went to use the restroom. Ramses offered to take Anastasia off my hands. I wanted to keep her. San Francisco night games get chilly, and … her body heat keeps you warm in the carrier.""While I was away, I texted Ramses a photo of the food menu in the Field Club. I thought since I was passing by, I might as well grab something for us. He said he'd have whatever had the shortest line," she continued, sharing a screenshot of her husband's texts as proof."I returned with brisket sandwiches and loaded fries. He moved my jacket to clear my seat, greeted our smiling daughter, and asked whether I wanted to eat first … I told him to go ahead," Alvarez added. "I had eaten before we left for the game, and I knew he hadn't had a full meal all day."The mother then said her husband "offered to take the containers off my lap, but I told him I was fine holding my food and the nachos." She added that he also offered to feed her, but she told him to "enjoy" the food instead.Alvarez wrote on Substack that she "cried" after receiving "disturbing" messages in response to the clip. She said that her husband, meanwhile, has had "remarkable composure" and been her greatest supporter throughout the ordeal."He knows who he is and doesn't let strangers define his relationship with us.
