@sandman : My favorite story about Grant was the fact that he was known as a heavy drinker. When Abe Lincoln was ready to put him in charge of the whole army he was informed of this. Lincoln's response was "Find out what he drinks and send a barrel to all my generals because he's the only one fighting!"

I've read several books on Grant includeing Ron Chernow's. His rise from obscurity to President of the United States is one of the most incredible events in US history. The circumstances of his being forced to write an autobiography as he was dying of cancer just so he wouldn't leave his wife in debt is one of the saddest. But it left us with one of the greatest autobiographies ever written.

Watched E1 tonight. So far, it's been good... not a whole lot of opinions or hidden agendas, mostly facts and little interpretation and focused on his military campaigns.
