Tips for Not Being a Victim of a Scam

Constable Deputies regularly field calls about scam artists stating to be from the Social Security Administration, etc. Please follow these tips, and if you ever have any doubt about who you are talking to, find the organization's main number and call them directly.

-Never give out any personal information (such as name, date of birth, social security number, etc.) by phone, email, or over the internet if you do no know the recipient.

-Never provide any form of payment (or transfer money) to anyone wanting immediate payment- especially in the form of prepaid gift cards, green dot card, etc. These are not payment options for legitimate individual sellers, businesses, or government entities.

-Never call the scammer using the phone number they provide or the one listed on caller ID. Scammers often manipulate caller ID and numbers to make them appear legitimate.

-Verify the identity of anyone claiming to be law enforcement, IRS, or other government official by contacting the agency directly.

Lot of scammers out there also that hit people up at grocery stores, gas stations and intersections. They always have a good story down on their luck and some will even use kids with their scam. Give to HAM or find another charity you can vet. They are better equipped to sift thru the con people from people that do need help than you are. We are getting more of those people in our area since COVID.
