Daaaaaave: Yikes! That sounds electrical! Either that or welding/light manufacturing smells from an area business. We used to get that smell from a small foundry when we lived in Iowa but only if the breeze was from a favorable direction.
KathyMarshall : In Illinois, we lived down the road from a Quaker Oats plant. If the wind was blowing out of the northeast, my whole neighborhood would smell like freshly baked cookies!
Daaaaaave : Here a great while back I came to my home from an outing with my daughter and when I got out of the vehicle I declared oh my someone hit a skunk and she informed me it wasn't skunk but weed. It surprises me as to how often now people are smoking weed. I'm really naive.
BJDLPD : I try to keep it inside because I know some people absolutely cannot stand the smell and try to be conscious of that. I like to eat it more anyway 
But, yes, a good number of people do partake in the electric lettuce these days - and it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between Pepé Le Pew and cannabis.

Daaaaaave: YES! Whenever we drove through Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Quaker Oats factory there always made it smell like breakfast oatmeal! Yum!
