>> And if anyone would like to explain how this is different from the 1986(?) Immigration overhaul where about 3 million illigal immigrants were allowed to stay?
@nikkiole:
Assuming this is a serious question, the 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli Act was a negotiated act of Congress, split at the time between a Republican Senate and Democrat House.....signed into law by Pres Reagan. The difference is obvious, the follow on EO from Reagan and Bush were clarifications to exemptions under the Act. Tonight's announcement enjoys no prior Congressional action. Hope that helps
That said, I still think the Pres is good to go on this....and frankly, it doesn't change the situation on the ground much So far, we're not passing out citizenships, etc. And it won't register a tiny ripple in economic benefits to the country. I say that with one caveat....I've not seen the language in the EO. The Pres has a habit of being unable to reconcile his words with actions.......i.e. despite assurances, I've had to change two long time doctors for instance. But, with this hedge, I contend this was high order grandstanding.
A big question is what to do with the 8million illegals who don't fall under tonites announced guidelines.
@Clydepuckett:
Thank you.
So, in your opinion, why do you think so many people are under the impression that what the president is doing is illegal? And if it is indeed not, then surely the Republican leaders know this as well? And if so, that leads to my second question: if they know this, then why are they continuing the idea that what the president is doing is illegal and that they are going to try and make sure he is punished for what he's doing?
@nikkiole:
This is my opinion. Whether it is illegal or not he is going against the will of the American people who do not want him to take this action.
@cbp210:
"Whether it's illegal or not"? Do you know for sure if it is? Because if it isn't illegal, and you don't think it is, you could have fooled me.
As for me, I have been trying to find any indication that what the president has done is "illegal." Ill advised, dumb, divisive, we can argue all those points, but "illegal"? Or was that just some talking points picked up by people that so dislike the President, they're willing to chant the word without really realizing what they're saying?
Dunno. Seems like something I would be 100% sure about before I put it out there.
@nikkiole:
I will say he walking a thin line on this one which can go either ways and now I can see why he waited till after the mid term elections.
