The National Suicide Prevention Line hotline number is now shortened to 9-8-8
As of 7/16/22, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, can be more easily reached by calling or texting 988, or chatting on 988lifeline.org.
988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the U.S., you can easily access 24/7 emotional support. You do not have to be suicidal to reach out. Our trained crisis counselors can help you through whatever mental health challenges you are experiencing.
What happens when you call 988?
First - you will hear an automated message featuring additional options while your call is routed to your local Lifeline network crisis center. Second - you will hear a little music while you are connected you to a skilled, trained crisis worker. Third - a trained crisis worker at your local center will answer the phone. This person will listen to you, understand how your problem is affecting you, provide support, and get you the help you need.
