eighteen : And we're not talking about what we did 30+ years ago. That **** don't fly these days.

@MrsT : When I was 16, I rode my bike to the local YMCA and stayed all day and rode home. However, I was 16 and knew what to do if I thought I was in danger. I rode through neighborhoods where friends lived.

That's sad. It's weird that she just left her kid to wander around aimlessly in a parking lot for hours. Aside from the safety aspect, it's hot as heck outside too. It's not the same as being told to go outside and ride your bike or go play with your friends.

@Annabanana : She obviously was doing something that she did not want the child to be a part of. Hmmmm.

So, another 9yr old was found wandering the streets, only this time the Mother was found unresponsive in the driver's seat of a vehicle with an empty bottle of vodka.

@eighteen : Are you saying that is what happened to her?

eighteen : Your mom drove you to a parking lot and dropped you off and drove away?

@TortieMama : She didn't have to, I walked or rode my bike to where I needed/wanted to go. Secondly, where does it say the Mother left the boy? It says he was waiting for his Mom to pick him up.

In that case, I was abandoned all the time. Sorry folks, I'm not seeing the shock and awe value of this particular story. There's an apartment complex right there as well as a fire station, and several businesses where the boy could've gone inside to get a/c. Again, the phone place could've checked on him and/or offered a phone for him to use if he was without one.

If they were about to close their doors and it was dark outside, then maybe, someone needed to be called, but I'm not very sympathetic to this situation given the current details.

@eighteen : So, it sounds like she dropped him off. "a 9-year-old boy, who stated he had been waiting for his mother to return for at least two hours."

@TortieMama : Are Mom's the only people in existence to transport children?

Seems like he would have found his way home. Or into a store to cool off. Just doesn't seem right.

@eighteen :
How old are your kids? Would you drop them off in a parking lot for hours alone? I wouldn't do that to my kids. Hell my parents would never have done this either.

eighteen : Sure, let's be real. The real problem is that more and more parents don't want to parent their children. They're not surviving adulthood because their parents were too busy ignoring them instead of teaching them life skills and values, and molding them into good humans. They're letting phones and tablets raise them to keep them out of their hair. Sure, teach kids skills to be self-sufficient, but it's not done by leaving them alone unsupervised in a freaking parking lot for hours. Had this ended in tragedy, would you still feel the same about the Mom and this situation?

@Annabanana : Well, I don't think she's a ****** Mom; and if you really want to be real... the same people that are in shock and awe over this situation don't blink twice when it comes to young children and device usage... inviting people from all corners of the Earth into their children's lives.

Had something happened, then it would've been a sad situation like anything else; but fact of the matter is, Texas law is stricter about leaving children unattended in a vehicle than they are just unsupervised... again, it's based on a child's maturity level, not age. So, without more details, I'm not about to sit here and judge the situation. There were several resources available. It's not like he was dumped on the side of 59, or something more dangerous.
